Seizures caused by parents ?

gallantman45@yahoo.com - 01 May 2006 18:41 GMT Hello
I am 50 years old. I started having complex partial seizures when I was 12.
They were so minor that I just ignored them. Twenty years ago, i moved 1000 miles away from my mother and during that whole year that i was gone, i did not have any seizures. (and i was not on medication at the time. ) After I came back , however, the seizures came back.
When I was 40 I started taking medication for cps. (tegretol) This helps a lot. Even though i still have seizures, they are not as ""bad"". ( remember they really not all that bad to begin with. )
Last August, my mother ( who was 84 ) broke her hip. She died last December. Since she broke her hip, ( and later death) and had to become humble, I hav not had any more seizures. This new seizure free period is the longest i have ever had (8 months now)
Today, i heard a customer talk abouth her neighbor who had seizures, that stopped after his parents died.
So, anybody out there who experienced the same thing ? Can your mom and/or dad be a seizure trigger ?
I.I.
howdydave - 01 May 2006 19:08 GMT Howdy!
Maybe not "mom & dad" per se...
but STRESS is a well known trigger.

G. - 01 May 2006 21:13 GMT Another thing, in addition to Dave's suggestion, I found for a period that changes in Barometric (Air) pressure caused headaches and aggravated some of my CPs for a period (1-2 yrs). If you went back there, separate from where you are now, there could also have been a change in the pressure? that could aggravate some types. But the stress I'd bet on, can trigger some of the seizure types, including (our) CP seizures. G./
paul.chiasson@ns.sympatico.ca - 02 May 2006 01:49 GMT I'm more prone to believe that stress had something to do with your seizures. Was there any overt or unconcious conflict between you and how they felt they reacted or treated you. Or did they to "nag" about things, or be over-protective? It's a question for a psychologist, if you really want to make an effort at dealing with the question, even post mortem your parents. It might explain a few things, give you insight into others.

Hello, I.I., welcome to our group. I am sorry for your loss. I am only a couple years older than you. My mother died in 2004. There were many days while taking care of our mother or father that stress became a factor in triggering a seizure. My doctor said it could have also been triggered by lack of sleep. The stress wasn't because there was a conflict, but rather due to the concern for their illness (my father also broke his hip and died, before that he had colon cancer, and many years coping with the effects of a stroke), the many doctor's visits (my mother had dimentia), and I think in my case I tended to ignore my own medical needs because I was busy helping take care of our parents.
I hope you can continue with your seizure free life. It is refreshing.
Take care, Julie
gallantman45@yahoo.com - 03 May 2006 01:56 GMT Hi Julie
Thanks for the welcome!
What type(s) of seizures do you have ?
I.I.
Julie - 03 May 2006 23:50 GMT > Hi Julie > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > > I.I. I have been seizure free for 10 years, actually it will be 11 years this summer. I have tonic clonic seizures. But I did have some events within that 10 year time period that could have been a simple or complex partial seizure.
I am currently seeing an epileptologist to help me go off an older drug, phenobarbital. I am now taking both phenobarbital and keppra and will slowly go off the phenobarbital. It was kind of difficult at first, but things are getting better.

Sofia - 23 May 2006 22:55 GMT >> So, anybody out there who experienced the same thing ? Can your mom >> and/or dad be a seizure trigger ? Strange this factor, I remember getting epileptic seizures in the school playground when I was approx 13 years old at about a rate of 3-4 a month, then I went to Cyprus on a holiday for 4 months to stay with relatives, and all through that length of time, I can't ever remember having one seizure.
Maybe it was the stress of life at home, or the the stress of life at school, or maybe even both I'll never know, but what I do know is that a holiday always seems to do us some kind of good I suppose!
All the best

J. T. Laurie - 10 Apr 2007 03:43 GMT my grandparents, but its the stress they cause. and it might have been something in the environment in which you were living that caused the sieuzres, not the parents themself.

i still think my single seizure was induced chemically. i had the place sprayed shortly before it happened, with insecticide.

[quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > > - Show quoted text - It's not unusual for a seizure (one of) to be triggered by exposure to pesticides, paint or cleaner fumes, hot muggy air in summer and other triggers without a person necessarily having epilepsy. But also many of us are *sensitive to some of those and can have an Aura or seizure onset brought on by some of those too. My Aura used to include a Lemon odour or taste on top of my tongue before the stronger onset. Many of the popular 'floor cleaners' laced with Lemon to cover up whatever other chemical odours might be there, will bring on an Aura and quick weak feeling within 30 seconds of exposure. If I don't get out to fresh air within a couple of minutes I *expect that I'd have a full Complex Partial seizure, even though the last official one I had was June 1998. I Still get the dizzy swirling 'twilight zone' feeling when near lemons. Now, Chocolate on the other hand.... :-> G./
Dennis - 23 Apr 2007 04:10 GMT As a person who has had epilepsy for the past 33 years, I can tell you that stress of any form has been responsible for my seizures over the years. Be it grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts or uncles--if situations stressed me out, I could expect a seizure everytime. When I'm able to manage my stress levels, my seizure activity goes way down. Find out what stresses you out and do your best to reduce ( if not eliminate) your stress triggers. You may be surprised how well you do.

> As a person who has had epilepsy for the past 33 years, I can tell you > that stress of any form has been responsible for my seizures over the > years. It gets stranger than that (At least for me anyways). I can have an aura for NO REASON AT ALL.
Yep. You heard me correctly. NO REASON AT ALL.
I can be doing ANYTHING. Be ANYWHERE. And have one at ANYTIME. Heck, I've sometimes had them while sitting in front of the computer (When this is the cause, walking away from the computer for a while usually solves the problem)
All for no reason at all.
What are the feelings I get when I have one? Well for me, it can come one of two ways.
The first is what I like to call the "partial partial". The "partial partial" is little more than a tingling feeling, usually in my left arm (I have felt it to some extent in the right one too). Over time (Usually over the course of several minutes), it just gets stronger and stronger with each tingling wave. At its worst, it can feel like my left arm is being ripped off my shoulder. It can also be so strong that it starts to affect my head, giving me a momentary feeling of slight and subtle dizziness.
The other kind is the complete partial. This one is the scariest because it's so deceiving. I don't know from one complete partial to another if one of them will actually turn out to be the "Big Kahuna" (I think we all know what that is, but I'll explain it anyways later). A CP for me starts out like the Big Kahuna does. It starts out with a licking of my chops feeling (As if I were looking down at a nice juicy T-Bone steak). This is the signal for me to get to my bed or - And especially if out in public - the nearest safe place (As in an area that IS NOT on a hard floor or pavement), and lay down on my side (Laying on my side is to prevent me from swallowing my tongue and to allow any secretions to flow out. This is an instruction given to me in a discharge paper from the ER when I had a seizure not too long ago). I then lay there throughout the onset, yelling out (Not neccessarily for help, but just yelling out as this helps in keeping me from biting down on my tongue as long as I can keep talking. If someone comes, oh well. I can explain it to them once the event is over).
Obviously "The Big Kahuna" is the seizure itself. When I have one of these, I get all the symptoms above, but unlike a CP, the onset does not stop. Obviously when that happens, I go under and don't come to until it's over. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours (Just recently, I was out for a good 2-3 hours with a seizure). When I do come to, I get a slight nauseating feeling, almost like I've got to throw up, but not quite. When I was younger though, I would throw up at least once. Nowadays, a can of soda in the ER is usually enough to settle things down.
After coming out of a seizure, I **ALWAYS** call an ambulance and go to the ER. I have found this to be most beneficial. Add to the fact that I've been known to have MORE than one seizure in any given 24 hour period and that's all the more reason to have the paramedics take me in. Some of them don't always like it, but oh well - TOUGH KAHUNAS. I need medical care.
Well....That's my Epileptic life. What's yours?
Cheers :D

J. T. Laurie - 17 May 2007 03:55 GMT Mine are really really weird. mine resemble silent panic attacks. I just sort of roll around and arch my back, hyperventilate and shake, once did I drool, and only once did I run a high fever after I bashed my head into the floor. mine last anywhere from thirty seconds to my alltime record of eight hours.

The pesticides used today by professional are designed not to effect breathing problems or anything such as this. Now the over the counter products could very well have an effect on someone.

You dropped out part of my post in above quote ("It's not unusual..." etc. ) that changes the context somewhat. For the record I said (I added the ***s in Line 2) -->
It's not unusual for a seizure (one of) to be triggered by exposure to pesticides, paint or cleaner ****fumes*****, hot muggy air in summer and other triggers without a person necessarily having epilepsy. But also many of us are *sensitive to some of those and can have an Aura or seizure onset brought on by some of those too. ***<The original poster also had only *1 szr. so far, and not more/ enough to be able to test to see if it was a longer term problem like some of us have or a single event. >
Old post cont'd-> *My Aura used to include a **Lemon odour or taste on top of my tongue** before the stronger onset. Many of the popular 'floor cleaners' laced with Lemon to cover up whatever other chemical odours might be there, will bring on an Aura and quick weak feeling within 30 seconds of exposure. I don't know what's in any Professional stuff now, but 2 years ago some used Lemon among the fillers, and it produced the same Auras as I used to get (in 1993) at Szr.Onset, where any strong Lemon Cleaner would produce the aura typical of a Right Temporal Lobe CP seizure onset. /G.
