What to expect during video EEG

Hello there.  Well, we had our appointment with the U of Chicago drs
and they're confounded as to why Steve suddenly had these seizures, as
the usual causes have been mostly ruled out.  He hasn't had any
problems at all since starting the Lamictal (no side effects and no
seizure activity).

Next step is a video EEG. They say he'll be in the epilepsy center for
about 5-6 days, and that they take him off his meds for 48 hours to try
to induce a seizure.  They haven't told us much more than that.  Steve
is very apprehensive about this -- he doesnt' want to have a seizure,
understandably!  But we want to see if we can get to the bottom of
this.

Can anyone shed some light as to what its like to go through this?  Any
pointers?  Will he be able to have visitors?

Thanks!

Vicki

Hi Vicki and Steve,
They tell you 5-6 days, that's a guesstimate.  If they record seizure
activity in less time, they'll set him free.
Mostly, it's boring.  He'll be a perfectly healthy person stuck in a
hospital room.  They'll glue the EEG electrodes to his scalp and then
wrap them in a turban of gauze, with the leads running down to a wire
about ten feet long.  That's long enough to move around the room and go
to the bathroom, but not to wander the halls.  They'll prefer that he
stays in bed, since that's where the video camera is aimed.
If the monitors show anything, people will come rushing in to observe
him. He'll be instructed to press the call button if he feels any type
of seizure.
I repeat, it's boring.  Bring books, a laptop, that needlepoint project
that's been in the closet for months. You should be able to visit.
In addition to stopping the meds, they'll keep him awake all night,
since sleep deprivation can cause a seizure.
Here's hoping they record something quickly.

Howdy Vicki!

They may want somebody in the room with him at all times.

Some places don't provide staff for that so you MAY have
to provide your own sitters.

Yes, most places say that you need to have someone stay with you. bring
a phone card so you can call out so you can keep in touch with the real
world. Usually you cannot use head phone or cell phones since they can
cause an interference.....some places do have video games you can use,
some do not so call them up and ask....see if they have VCRs and bring
the movies you have been wanting to catch  up on, too!!! BOOKS,
puzzles, things to add stress to your brain like paper work, balance
that check book, math, challenge things, letters to write, that sort of
things, crafts......

My son and I brought a guitar, a soft cloth ball to toss around, it did
help some to move around to metabolize the meds, use them up so you can
try to egg on a seizure, sleep deprovation. Whatever triggers you to
have one you need to try with the doctors knowledge of course. They
might try photic stimulation or hyper ventilation. SOme places will try
using benedryl if that triggers you as well......Sometimes it takes a
long time for some people, others take very short time for
others....(for my son it just did not trigger while wired up, I tell
him he gets the VEEG cure each time if he could stay wired up for life
he would not have seizures.....)

Best of luck to you
