Hey folks,

First post here, just wondering if anyone in the group suffers seizures
as a result of an AVM? I got the all clear for the AVM after gamma
radiation treatment a couple of years ago but still get seizures about
every 2-3 months. Apparently most AVM sufferers' seizures go away once
the AVM is gone. Anyone have similar experiences?

Welcome to our group, Mibrad.  I have to say I didn't know what AVM was,
so for the benefit of those who are as ignorant as I, I did a search.
http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9690

According to this medical dictionary:
AVM: An AVM (arteriovenous malformation) is a congenital disorder (one
present at birth) of blood vessels in the brain, brainstem, or spinal
cord that is characterized by a complex, tangled web of abnormal
arteries and veins connected by one or more fistulas (abnormal
communications).

The AVM has no capillary bed of its own and the fistulas in the AVM
permit high-speed, high-flow shunting of blood from the arterial to the
venous side of the circulation. This shunting causes low blood pressure
(hypotension) in the arterial vessels feeding the AVM and neighboring
areas of the brain that they normally supply with blood.

It does go on to say some suffer from seizures.  I don't have any
experience with this issue, but it will be interesting to hear what
others say.  If that is what caused the seizure disorder and the docs
have fixed the problem, then it sounds quite likely that the seizures
would go away.

One thing to consider, some people have more than one cause for
seizures, and/or more than one type of seizure.  But I would think your
doctors would be aware of that.

Take care,
Julie
