Although Dilantin has long been known to grow unwanted body hair in some
patients, have there been any studies documenting pattern baldness in
users?  Since baldness and body hair seem to be twins, I'm wondering if
this question has come up before.

I can't point you to any studies, but I can tell you that I have suffered hair
loss myself since I started on Dilantin. One thing it has done is to make my
hair somewhat hard & brittle and I guess that may be causing some of the loss in
terms of the hairs breaking off. It has done the same to my fingernails. Another
thing that coincided with my use of Dilantin has been excessive oiliness of the
scalp, mainly on the sides around and above the ears.

Let's face it, hair loss is normal as we age. However, Dilantin immediately
accelerated that process in my case. Ironically, it has made my eyebrows grow
more rapidly, but I've had basically none of the unwanted body hair growth that
some people apparaently get.

I wonder if trileptal has hair loss as a side effect.I have noticed very
oily hair too.

There's a long horror list of possibilities (mostly very remote ones) at
http://rxlist.com/cgi/generic3/oxcarbazepine_ad.htm and hair loss isn't
mentioned among those side-effects of trileptal.

I'm (currently) on Dilantin and Topamax.  I've had pretty much every side
effect from anti-seizure medications (ranging from sleepiness to rash and
depression and being suicidal).  Hair loss is (fortunately) one I haven't
had (yet), -but- I'm only 28 and my family has a history of keeping hair
until very late in life.

These side effects are not acceptable.  How long do you plan to stay on
these drugs?  I see in another post that you got the VNS, I think that
was you.  Will you be going off these drugs?

Dear Julie:
As soon as I informed my neurologist of the suicidal side-effects of one of
the medications I was on, he took me off of it immediately.  (Not slowly,
just straight off.)  Fortunately, the only side effects of the medications I
am on right now are severe sleepiness and (mild) depression (I'm on 300 mg
Dilantin and 2x400 Topamax a day -- down from 400 mg Dilantin and 2x400 mg
Topamax a day.)  Hey!  I can live with that -- :))) at least I don't keep a
steak knife in my bathroom anymore.  :D  Our hopes are that the VNS -may-
stabilize my seizures and I can -maybe- reduce the medications.  But, I take
every day as it comes.

If the Dr. knew about the rash (***s at top, above) you should have
been taken off it, right away, for the **allergy effects it was
producing.   It's too bad they didn't take steps sooner to either move
to something else or adjust your doses, so the side effects went away.
Any advisories given to you with new prescriptions can be discussed
with the Pharmacist if they show up, as **they have the Manufacturer's
Scripts, and often know more than the Drs. about whether an effect is
from a pill or indicates that a change should be made (by the Doctor).

Noooo thank you... my pharmacists are idiots.  I switched pharmacies because
of the insanity.  My old pharmacist (CVS pharmacy) would give me 3 pills,
(LOL... that's not even one morning dose) and say "come back tomorrow", even
though it had gotten so bad I had called the prescription in TWO WEEKS ahead
of time and DOUBLE CHECKED two days before (just to make sure they would
have enough time to get everything right).  In addition, they would give me
the wrong pills, broken pills, wrong number of pills, and screw up the
insurance EVERY TIME.
My (new) pharmacist (Ingles Pharmacy) gets (most) everything right, but is
simply convinced that I should receive twice as much pills that I should,
but at least that's a minor problem.  I tried explaining that 4 (200 mg
Topamax Tablets) x 30 (days) should be 120 (200 mg pills), or 8 (100 mg
Topamax Tablets) x 30 (days) should be 240 (100 mg pills).  Instead, I have
240 (200 Mg pills) in my bottle.
I have checked and rechecked and rechecked and rechecked until I am blue in
the face.  Everyone agrees that my prescription is right, and I am taking
the dosage per day, and my -blood levels- are OK... but the pharmacy doesn't
see the mathematical error.  So, I give up.  I have tried to defend honesty
enough.  I just give up.  So I get free pills.

besides hair loss I had to get:

-gum surgery
-wisdom teeth pulled
-many skin and bleeding problems

Tegretol actually did more hair loss to me than Dilantin

I know many older people still taking Dilantin and it works for them!!
