Does anyone know if Topomax and Lamictal show up on drug screening tests? If
so, does it show up as a drug that may cause an employer 'not' to hire a
potential employee? I thought they only looked for narcotics but I'm not
sure.
The reason I'm asking is that during the interview process I did not
disclose I had epilepsy (based on advice I was given), I planned to tell
them if I was hired.
Any advice/experience with this situation would be appreciated!
thanks!

Trish, Did you have your drug test yet? Where I live you just bring in
what you have been presribed and they write it down. As long as you
have a prescription for it and you are not abuseing it. Then you pass.
Even if it is pain killers you just can't be abuseing them. But those
are not good to take with seizures. Before I even started to have
seizures when my dad died. The Dr called in something for me. I forget
what it was. But I went for a job and got it. Had to hav a drug test.
My employor was not getting the results so they had me call. There was
a trace of what the DR gave me in the drug test. So they called my DR
and verified it. And that was that. Where I was working never new. But
then it was not some street drug. I would not worry. Good Luck with
your Job. I Truely Hope You Get It. M. Finney

Pre-Employment and Employment drug screens usually look for things like
Cocaine, Marijuanna, Herion, and Meth. There are certain ingredients in each
of them that will show up on a drug screen, these ingredients will also be
found in thing such as Speed, XTC, Hashish, Crack, and many of the other
common street drugs. The Anti Epilepsy drugs are normally a theraputic drug
and even though they will show up on a drug screen they will not be reported
as a street drug. This was told to me by a tester that I once was getting
tested by and I did not list any of my meds and passed with flying colors.
However it is always a good idea to list that you have a seizure disorder
and that you take meds for it, that way there will be no question. Why
chance a job on the omission of a short statement is the way I look at it.
One thing that can make you test positive on a drug screen is eating a
poppie seed muffin before taking the test, or using some of the over the
counter cold medicines the night before. If you have used something like
Nyquil you need to list it on the paperwork or you will test positive for
Anphetamines, or Meth.

Trish on many application they will ask you if you have any medical
condictions, did this one ask that? If it did and you did not disclose it
that is grounds for termination if and when you do tell them. I did that
once and figured I would tell them later and they fired me because I lied on
the application. I know it may be something you were told not to disclose
but it is always better to be up front with everyone. Even if they were to
hire you they could now refuse you medical benefits. Honesty is always the
best.
I hope it doesn't happen to you.

It depends on the type of drug test. A tox 1 urine drug screen tests for
less and is less expensive. However it tests for opiates, amphetamines, THC
and ETOH, among other things.
Other more expensive tests will test for Ritilan and more difficult abusive
drugs. I am sure they will ask what meds your on. Oh and don't eat a lot of
poppy seed muffins before your test :-)
Good luck

Thank you everyone -- I feel alot better now!
I am supposed to go in for the test next week so I will take everyone's
advice and write down exactly what I'm taking on the questionaire at the
clinic (and I'm taking the Rx bottles with me).
Thanks again!
