Paranoia

Hi peeps,

It's been a couple of years since I last posted here, after setting up
SeizureSalad.org.uk.
I had a bad road accident 10 years ago with head injuries resulting in a
mild form of epilepsy due to damage to my left temporal lobe and have been
taking Tegretol ever since to control it.

I seem to be getting more an more paranoid about things recently, such as my
girlfriend, job, car etc. and was wondering if anyone else had this from
similar injuries and medication. Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,

Gareth

Hi.  Do the feelings seem to come and go on their own, or are there any
things happening around you at the time, that you can relate to them?
I think you were still posting when I found out ~4 years ago that
Grapefruit juice can mess up Tegretol functioning.   One of the acids in it,
that's not in other citrus juices, was the problem for me.  Since I only
used it each 4-8 days, as I didn't like it anyway, it wasn't something I
related to a seizure onset I had 4-6 hours later.   I think I found out
about that on the http://efa.org medications site? or someone posted it
here.
I was also told to be careful with Alcohol use, and Upset Stomach
remedies as those can flush the med. levels faster than we'd want.
Another thing is if the sensations are happening a long time from when
you take the previous dose, they might be wearing off early?  I assume
you're using one of the Time Released types?  Tegretol CR, XR or Retard? as
those are used most times now over the older plain types.
Alternatively, they might want to add one of the newer 2ndary
medications and reduce the dose of Tegretol (slowly), but I don't know if
that would be appropriate for your type of cause.  Mine was result of
Encephalitis, years ago, and the type of damage we each have would be
different.
There might also be something (new) under the http://efa.org site about
Left Temporal Lobe Seizures (some sites now group those under Complex
Partial type, as the newer term).
Mine are in Right Temporal Lobe, so affect short term memory and new
learning, but other parts of our symptoms I think are different between the
2 sides.
Keep reading, as some people only post 3-4x a week :-<  so other ideas or
links might turn up as more people see your post.

Do you want to describe a little more what the feelings are like? and do
they happen more at e.g. certain times of the day vs. others or do they just
show up when they feel like it?  There are a bunch of new people since you
were more active, and some of the olde timers are still around.  Since there
are people in about 10? of the timezones, some replies might come in over
next few days as they read the posts.      G./

As a recently former loved one of someone with epilepsy/seizure
disorder, and on a meds change roller coaster....YES. This is also
part of why I'm a "former."

I feel that this could be something that most of us seem to go through
when we first begin to have seizures. All sorts of thoughts go racing
through our minds such as, "will my partner still love me, and will I
ever marry and have children", "will I ever get employment, or will I be
sacked from the job I have already for taking too much sick leave", "will
I ever be able to drive, or will they take away the license I already
have".

I grew up with similar paranoid thoughts running through my mind as a
teenager, before I had a partner or a job, although I can't say I've ever
been given permission to drive a car. After I married though, everything
began to fall into place - I had somebody to stand by me, unlike biscuit
did with his partner, who also gave up his own career to become my carer,
and somebody who could drive me everywhere, therefore there was no great
need for me to be able to drive.

These thoughts disappeared for me, and haven't come back since, so I think
maybe the best thing for you to do, is to forget they exist, and just get
get on with your life. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

All the best

Sofie
