Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has heard of or has had a similar experience
to mine. I'm 46 and began having seizures when I was 5 which lasted
until age 30. I then just stopped having them. I pretty much had all
types - grand mal, petit mal, psychomotor....
With the recent connection made between women with epilepsy and
hormones, I have to wonder if I went through a hormonal shift at 30
which stopped the seizures. If that is true, then there is a chance
that I could resume having seizures in a few years when my body will be
in a real hormonal flux.
Has anyone stopped having seizures, been medication free and then
started having them again?
Thanks in advance.
Colleen

Hi Colleen. I will be seeing a new doctor about my epilepsy. He is the
new Director of the Epilepsy Center here in Boise. My husband and I met
with a support group that he attended. In addition to getting to know the
doctor, we were able to ask some questions. I do remember that there are
some cases where people stop having seizures, just like there are some
cases where people start having seizures, for no apparent reason. I asked
him if it would be possible for me to try going off my medication since I
have gone for 10 years without seizures. But I also told him that I was on
a very old drug. His suggestion was that I have a newer drug onboard
before I try to go off AEDs because going off phenobarbital could bring on
a seizure. I am scheduled to see him next month and will find it
interesting to ask him about possible problems due to hormone changes.
Take care,
Julie

Hi Julie and Colleen,
Well I'm one step ahead of you (age-wise), on my last visit to my neuro
I aksed him how menopause, which I am having a fun time with :-( ,
would affect my seizures. I also have simple and complex ones. He said
it was different for everyone. Some have a decrease and others an
increase. As for me, at 52, things are still in a bit of flux and my
partials have increased this last year. Once menopause is complete I am
curious what will happen. Keeping my fingers crossed they get better
but I guess you live with whatever is tossed your way. Best of luck
and am curious what Julie hears from her new doctor. Vicki

Thank you both for your reply. I too will be curious to hear what
Julie's doctor has to say although I assume he will say basically the
same thing as Vicki's doctor said - it's different for everyone. It is
interesting that your seizures have increased in the past year. I
wonder if there are any in depth studies out there on how menopause and
seizures relate to each other. I have a feeling that people who suffer
from seizures know more than the doctors though. Julie, please keep me
posted as to what your doctor has to say about going off your
medication. Good luck to both of you.
