Hi Folks,

Looks like flu season is here again. I had two GM seizures about 9 years
ago, and have been on dilantin ever since. That seams to have kept the
seizures at bay.
When first diagnosed, my doctor (a "gp") told me I needed to start
getting flu shots. I got one that year, and had more colds than I have ever
had that winter. that was the last one I took.
My question is , how do the rest of you feel about flu shots,
interaction with meds, ect.?

Thanks
mike

Mike,

I have never had a flu shot, and have never caught the flu since they
started giving them.  My living alone has most to do with it I assume.
To add on to that, not having much contact with others because I have
lived out in the sticks alot.

When people first started getting those shots, I saw how they suffered
more colds than usual.  That made me think twice about it.  I can also
use the fingers on one hand to count how many times I have had a cold
in the last 8-9 years.  I had a couple last fall/winter with bronchitis
and sinusitis, but I had moved to a more urban area for the last 1 1/2
years, plus being around a college campus.

I'm still real leery about them, but I have been thinking about it now.
The question I have about getting one is also about the interaction
with meds, if anyone knows anything.

Hi Mike, both my husband and I feel it is important for us to get flu shots each
year.  My husband has diabetes, which can be complicated by the flu.  One year
he didn't get his flu shot (even though I asked him to).  That year he got
really sick with the flu and said that from then on he would make sure he got a
shot.

I have epilepsy and when I think of the times I have had tonic clonic (grand
mal) seizures some of those times included when I was sick with the flu.  So in
my case, I believe it is beneficial to get a flu shot.

Take care,
Julie

I've been getting them for 3 or 4 years now. I was very reluctant because I
was afraid it might worsen my epilepsy, but after a severe bout of flu my
doctor encouraged me to do it.
I feel a bit achey for a day or two after the shot, but that's the only side
effect I've noticed.
