We spent 3 days last week in a childresn hospital....the neurologist we
took the baby to wanted to admit her. they did a 24 hour EEG, she had 4
smal seizures while hooked up to it, but the Dr. didn't seem to see
anything abnormal on the EEG. She is still on Phenobarbital, he has
"uped" her dosage now. But she is still having seizures. They are so
strange...it seems to be mostly when she is asleep now, her eyes pop
open and she gets stiff and her breathing becomes very rattled and
congested, she doesn't really shake or jerk anymore. It is so weird, we
just can't figure it out. Well, just an update, we still appreciate any
advice or info...thanks alot.

Our guards tend to be down while we are asleep, so in some cases some
types of szrs. might happen more easily during the night, than during the
day.
I wondered (reading above at **s) if she had just had a bad dream when
she woke up as you described.  I would expect REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep
would register on the 24 hour EEG while they were using it though if those
were dreams she was having. (Some dream states produce REM reactions in us,
at some of the sleep phases.)
It's strange that she appeared to have '4 small seizures', yet none of
that recorded onto the EEG.  I had thought that even a small electrical
firing (if it happened) would be recorded,  but then I'm not a Doctor...
Did you ask the Doctor about whether an allergy or ??(reaction) at home
could produce some of the symptoms they are having trouble locating in a
hospital environment?  /G.

I know this might sound stupid coming from a 39 year old woman, who wasn't
born with epilepsy, but finally diagnosed at 11 by a paediatrician, but I
just wanted to say that many EEG's I've had over the years came out
absolutely normal. This was happening whilst I could be having up to 5
tonic-clonic's per day when I was a child, and subsequently had to miss a
lot of school because of it, which Jillian may have to also face if she
doesn't grow out of them.

I'm sure I'm probably not the only person in the world suffering with
epilepsy that has had an EEG test go faulty on them, so I was wondering
whether it could have been baby Jillian's EEG that was abnormal, and not
your neurologist.

Hi I am new here,

Briefly, I have epilepsy, DH has epilepsy and now DD2 aged 9weeks has
epilepsy too.  Her EEG was also normal whilest she had seizures I was told
that was pretty common in babies.

How old is your baby now? Have you introduced solids? I saw your post
questioning allergies. My son is very allergic. When he was born he was
immediately allergic to dairy. As he got older his list of food allergies
became even bigger. He went through a period before we realized he was
allergic to so many foods. He has what looked like seizures. Since I have
epilepsy I was very upset and he had all the brain tests done. they ruled
out epilepsy. Then he saw an endocrinologist to see if he had diabetes. They
ruled that out also. Then I saw an allergist. That's when we realized his
seizures were probably a reaction to all the allergies we didn't know he
had. Including peanut, nuts, seeds, soy, apples and plums. I fed him all
those things. Now he tested positive to celiac disease. While I did my
research on it I found out that it can cause seizures because the body isn't
absorbing Folic acid properly. He is going to have more tests to see if
there is any damage to his intestines. He hasn't had anything that looks
like a seizure in years and since we eliminated those foods. Upon this
research I realized that maybe I should try a celiac died also. When I was
breastfeeding my youngest I had to give up dairy and eggs because he was
allergic through my milk. I was seizure free for over a year. i felt so
good. I wasn't eating any cakes or breads.
It's definitely something to think about. Let us know how your baby is
doing.

thank you for your post..i would like to talk to you a little more about
your experience. i am breastfeeding and i am starting a very strict diet
this week eliminating dairy, sugar, wheat. i didnt really think that these
things would have anything to do with the babies seizures, but from what
i understand it is quite possible....please post again or email me.
thank you so much!
