Snorkeling with epilepsy.

Hi,

I am going to my first vacation in several years to Hawaii. I plan to
spend some time in the water etc. I was planning to scuba dive but
understood the major risks involved with people with epilepsy since the
air you breathe from the tank and the after-reactions can trigger
epilepsies. I can live with that so I have stayed away from the idea of
scuba diving on the island.

So I am looking into snorkeling around the area, some of the "beginner"
coves and take a boat trip to snorkel around an area with a number of
dolphin. My epilepsy has been well controlled...as I only have an aura
or two every couple months. What are the chances that snorkeling may
aggravate an epileptic? Would this be primarily the breathing
technique, the depth? Or there shouldn't be any major concern if your
epilepsy is well controlled?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

My seizures aren't well controlled at all. I still have 3 - 5 complex
partials every day. I used to scuba dive and snorkel, both with no effect on
my seizures. I'm not sure what you mean about scuba diving and the air
breathed from tanks having after effects with epilepsies, but it never did
with mine.
However, as always, it's an individual thing and each person can react
differently. I'm not saying that it doesn't have effects....just not for
myself.

Darryl.
