Deprenyl and the relationship between its effects on spatial memory,
oxidant stress and hippocampal neurons in aged male rats.

School, Balcova, Izmir 35340, Turkey. muge.kiray@deu.edu.tr.

The oxidative stress may play a major role on the aging process and
associated cognitive decline, therefore antioxidant treatment may
alleviate age-related impairment in spatial memory. Cognitive
impairment could also involve the age-related morphological alterations
of hippocampal formation. The aim of this study is to examine the
relationship between the effects of deprenyl, an irreversible
monoamine-oxidase B inhibitor, on spatial memory by oxidant stress and
total number of neurons in the hippocampus CA1 region of aged male
rats. In this study 24 months old male rats were used. Rats were
divided into control and deprenyl groups and injected for 21 days.
Learning experiments were performed for six days in the Morris water
maze. Spatial learning was significantly better in deprenyl-treated
rats compared to saline-treated rats. Deprenyl treatment elicited a
significant decrease of lipid peroxidation in prefrontal cortex,
striatum and hippocampus regions and a significant increase of
glutathione peroxidase activity in the prefrontal cortex and
hippocampus. It was observed that deprenyl had no effect on the
superoxide dismutase activity. The total neuron numbers in the
hippocampus CA1 region were significantly higher in the deprenyl group
than in the control group. In conclusion, we demonstrated that deprenyl
increases spatial memory performance in aged male rats and this
increase may be related to suppression of lipid peroxidation and
alleviation of age-related decrease of the number of neurons in the
hippocampus. The results of such studies may be useful in
pharmacological modification of aging process.

Come on Dave, now as far as "rats" go, all the ones I (and James Cagney)
have known (and I've known a couple), there's no such thing as a
"friendly" conversation possible!    "Ahhhh Dirty Rat"..

My brother was a "rat" and I still don't have a friendly thing to say to
him!  "Dirty Rat Ahhhhhhh"..........

Of course again, I never experimented with him for six days in the
Morris water maze treatment to see if it elicited a significant decrease
of lipid peroxidation in prefrontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus
regions and a significant increase of glutathione peroxidase activity in
the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, SO I could be wrong now!...

Kind of wish I had now that I know that this increased spatial memory
performance may be related to suppression of lipid peroxidation and
alleviation of age-related decrease of the number of neurons in the
hippocampus especially since such studies may be useful in
pharmacological modification.

Now I did "cannonball" him once at a swimming pool but I guess that
doesn't count does it:)

Looking back, if I had only known!!!

Of course then again if the rats were friendly, there wouldn't have been
as many great gangster movies now would there???

well when the big one hits...we will see who remains a vegetarian and who

Like far out dude. I can remember (sometimes) doing cannabinols in a
pool myself. (Myself? I was with other people too.) I can dig what
you're saying. Not only couldn't I count, I had hard enough time just
keeping them lit & out of the water. You float good when your lungs are
full, but you need your arms to tread water when you exhale, or start
laughing or if Tammi-Lu is there. But that was a long time ago. When I
was young & foolish. I think it was June or August of last year.

WHY would I crosspost TO groups .. it . didn't .. BELONG .. in ..?

Deprenyl is an antiseizure .. drug ..

It is ALSO .. a 'cognition' .. drug ..
