owlvee - 14 May 2005 04:05 GMT I am being switched from Dilantin to Lamotrigine... Has anyone had experience with this medication.
I have grands at least twice a month and partials (petites), or small seizures two or three times a week and the dilantin and topiramate are not being effective evidently....
I am starting with 25mg every other day and working my way up with 500mg (200am/300pm)eventually.
Thanks. ~..~ owlvee

Liz & Allan MacDonald - 14 May 2005 13:59 GMT Lamotrigine/Lamictal increased my simple partials from 2-3 daily to a high of 14/day. It also gave me amazingly vivid dreams. No doubt you have been warned that a rash is a sign of a serious reaction to the drug. More than five years ago, when I tried it, my doctor didn't know that swollen glands was also a sign of a reaction to it. Hope it works for you! Liz

Fancy meeting you in this neck of the woods! :)
I'll second the VERY vivid and incredable in the minute detail. In my case, even the background information was detailed.
I'll give you the standard warning: WATCH OUT FOR THE RASH.
Ask your doc about interactions with other epilepsy drugs that can inhibit the lamictal. If the doseages of any other epilepsy drugs are changed, have them to a blood test on lamictal levels.

Thanks Dave, Ya know, I really don't want to stall around as far as getting the jump on this rash thing goes. (And just for the record, I am not even going to try and get with Mary on the "ref: Misery" posting anymore! She definitely has me horsewhipped on the ponies knowledge wise!!! :) )
BUT, as far as the rash is concerned, I am wondering if I should notice it with me starting out on the 25mg every other day or will do you think it should take a while. I did notice that my ankle areas felt like they had a misquito bitten itching last night type but no rash (I didn't seen any bites and will watch closer tomorrow when I take the med again).
Somewhere I read that the med can act like poison oak or ivy. Yesterday was my first day of taking the med. I'll be taking one 25 mg tab every other day for 14 days then once a day for 14 days, then twice a day for 14 days, then three times a day, then two twice a day etc, till build up to the 5oo mg at 2/100mg am and 3/100mg pm. I just wonder at what point in time should a person start getting a rash IF they were going to get one....
Again thanks, ~..~ owlvee

Also, my neurologist friend told me (when I started on it) that it is more likely for kids to develop the rash than older people. BUT, if ANYTHING looks like a rash, have it checked out IMMEDIATELY (it will likely not be tiny-area, like a bug-bite), since the rash can become dangerous rapidly. Look up Lamictal and rash on google for more, and read carefully the sheet that comes with the drug. My doctor was VERY conservative in the build-up rate, at 2mg/day, then 5mg/day, 10, etc. - and it took a couple of months to reach the final level (but not quite as long to get off it when it didn't work...). Since I was also on Depakote, the final level was lower than it would have been otherwise. Hint: about the only thing that covers the incredibly bitter taste of Lamictal when taking it is milk (preferably chocolate milk) - the taste of this stuff is HORRENDOUS! ;-)

You ain't seen nuthin' until you've tried the combo of lamictal and acid reflux...
Except maybe chomping down on a Depakote when it's in your mouth! (I had a seizure once when it was in my mouth and I got acid burns in my mouth!)

Ugh........., I'm still reeling from this one...! BLEAH! At least on the "front side", the milk makes it possible to swallow Lamictal without going into shock... BTW, in the 2 and 5mg sizes, Lamictal has a great "blackberry" flavor, so WHY are the larger sizes so terrible?!?!

I take 4 caps of 100mg phenytoin (dilantin), 1/200 mg topiramate, 1/100mg sertraline, 1 aspirin, 1 high potency multivitamin, along with the 25mg lamotrigine (which I have just started every other day) so I haven't noticed the taste really... (That's the am dosage, the pm now being 200mg topiramate).
Along with the large glass of water, it's like eating breakfast with out the problem of having to cook....
Blackberries heh? In that case, I can't wait to get to the full dosage.
I guess my mane ;) concern is the rash now............... (Just had to put my "bit" in now didn't I, if the fun is continuing ) ~..~ owlvee

Depends on whether you're talking about simple partials or complex partials.
Complex partials don't feel like anything: OBLIVIAN! There is just a chunk of time gone from your life.
SIMPLE partials feel like different things to different people:
There can be SENSATIONS involved: sounds, smells, tastes, nausia. There can be EMOTIONS involved: fear, anger, etc. There can be PERCEPTIONS involved: deja vu, jamais vu, out of body sensations, superconciousness, etc.

I'd get a little nauseated then get a "taste" in my mouth of what I described as a combination of old sock, raw potato, and cardboard. A smart-*ss resident (junior MD doing his neuro rotation) heard that and asked, "How do you know what old sock tastes like?" His grin, my <grrr>. Most of the time they were just followed by deja-vu's. Sigh, sometimes they weren't.
