My 21 yr.old son had I grand mal seizure when he was 16 yrs.old. He's had
none since then, on Trileptal. His EEG is normal. His Dr. is taking him off
his medication, and I can't help but be afraid. He's almost completely off
now. He drives, and I worry so much.
My husband has an abnormal EEG and has had 3 seizures. I'm just afraid that
my son will have another seizure.
Any comments/?

Some of the seizure types can be 'outgrown' if they start when we're
younger.  The Dr. will likely do another EEG ~4 weeks? after he's completely
off to make sure he's still 'clean'.  Most areas you only have to be Seizure
Free for 1-3 years (depends on State or Country), before they'd allow you to
drive with or without medication (depends on patient and type).
The Dr. wouldn't let him drive unless he thought it was safe, since the
Dr. could get into trouble if someone was following their directions and had
an accident.
Did they ever suggest where the one (1), he first had, came from?   /G.

(Is the same Dr. treating them both?  If he is, he'd likely know if their
seizure type and EEGs were 'the same'.   There are multiple places where a
seizure can launch from, and I've only met one other 'family based'  seizure
member here (in about 1998).  She had a sister and an Aunt with seizures,
but I don't remember if she even posted which seizure type she had.  Her's
were 'intractable' and had been difficult to control since she was a
child -- she was in early 20s in 1998, but had too many and too often to
even consider driving. )

I have a normal EEG and have grand mals and petites anyway so I am not
sure if a normal EEG is a good indicator for him or not. Was his EEG
normal before, might be a good question, but then again, like I say, I
still hve them, and I have always (that I know of) had a normal EEG.
Has the Dr said anything about him driving??

O.K. Throw it out (question about EEG).  Don't consider an EEG.  It
would be unlikely they'd have a 'normal' EEG, run as a Lark, on a Pre
14-year-old (ahead of his seizure* -> 1 seizure), unless  he might have
other pre-existing conditions that would warrant running one (I put **s
above showing his age and his *one seizure he's had).
The comment about her husband's history, EEGs, etc. history, I doubt
would be related to information wrt. her son, unless the Doctor thought
there was some reason they were related.

I would be surprised if there's a  Jurisdiction *anywhere that will keep
your Driver licence if you're seizure free for **5 years --> **s at top, and
although he's currently medicated, he has had only *1 seizure his entire
life, before being medicated at age 16.
If he gets Completely off the medication and has *no seizures for One
Year before he applied for a Driver licence, the Question in some
Jurisdictions is -->  " DURING that LAST 12 MONTHS, have you been treated
for Epilepsy, Unconsciousness, uncontrolled dizzyness, etc.. etc.. ?  "
to which, at that point, he could answer "No".
In the event there's a question like 'Are you currently using
medications for Heart Disease, Epilepsy, xxx, yyy'  like some areas have
also,  he could *also then answer 'No', and not require the extra time or
expense of having the Doctor fill out the form Certifying whether he's safe
to drive with his current prognosis and condition.   G./

If it were my child, I would follow the doctor's wishes.  Was your son
actually diagnosed with epilepsy?  Just asking that because almost
anyone can have a seizure given the right conditions, and one seizure
does not make a person an epileptic. Has your son ever had an abnormal
EEG?

The Dr. never used the word "epilepsy" in regards to my son. So, I don't
know. I don't think the the Dr. knows why he had a seizure. I just don't
like this "wait and see" mentality with this disorder, but it seems to be
the nature of the disorder. Thanks for your replays

I'm 31 and have had epilepsy since i was 12. I have gone from having
grand mal seizures to having complex partial seizures. there was a
period of which i was off all meds and was seizure free for about a
year, when they started again my seizures had changed in type. You
should find out soon if the medication was controling the seizures, if
your son starts having them again. in the mean time he shouldn't be
driving alone.

Well, His 24hr. EEG came back abnormal and his neurologist put him back on
his Trileptal 300mg.bid. I have mixed feelings. One one hand I have much
less of a worry of him having another seizure. On the other hand, you always
want your kids to not have to take a medicine or to have epilepsy. But, I am
blessed to have him safe and sound. love, chris
