Hi there. I am at high risk for diabetes based on what Ive read and
have alot of the "symptoms", I want to be tested for it. But I am out
of work so I dont have insurance. About how much should I expect to
pay to get tested for it? No one in my family has it so I dont really
have anyone to ask about this. Any replies appreciated thanks Happy

A lot of local health departments have free or low cost ($5) screenings.
Check the listings in your local paper or just call the health
department.

You can get a first approximation of being tested by buying a meter
and some test strips.  Wal-Mart has the cheapest.  Note that this is
certainly not ideal, but it can tell you whether you can wait a while
or need to get medical care on an emergency basis.  You might also
try a home A1C test - they are about $25.00.  In any case, if you have
a lot of the symptoms, you really need to try and get medical care
somewhere.  Most states have a health department that will work with
people who don't have insurance.  If you happen to live in the US
and are near the southern or northern border, cross over for cheaper
health care!....  Tests from a real doc vary all over the place,
depending on where you live.  I have been in places where an office
visit was $25, and where the same cost $150.  (In the same year).

Speaking only for myself,

time has passed by Wal-Mart's Reli-On meter/strips

the Reli-On needs a lot of blood and it's a pita to put
the drop of blood on the strip.  and all too often you
get a bloody (no pun intended :)) error!!

www.hocks.com is the better deal for strips and meters

i suggest the FreeStyle (1st!) (or the Accu-Chek Active)
for a *great* low cost meter

the home HbA1c test is also worth buying.  :)

hocks has them for $19 or $20, or 3 for $45.  :)))))

To start off just buy the cheap drug store urine test strips.  If it is not
green you probably have diabetes.  As someone suggested then go to your
health clinic. There are free tests.

I think I'd be getting either insurance or a job BEFORE I was officially
diagnosed as ANYTHING.
