Increase health of your heart
Bicycling is a good cardiovascular exercise that could increase the
health of your heart. A bike with several speeds will allow you to
increase you fitness level as your cardiovascular function improves.

Without going into the "who, what and why" of the above post, it does remind
me that when I quit High School my mother gave away the bicycle I used to
get to and from the school. It upset me at the time. In 1981 my wife and I
bought ourselves bicycles, then for our kids, but we rode only occasionally
and on short rides. It was not until I had a severe ankle injury in 1994
that I realised that I could move around on a bicycle with no problems. It
was not until I was diagnosed in 1995 with Type 2 diabetes that I realised
that riding the bicycle was an excellent way to lose weight and to rapidly
lower my blood glucose after eating. It was in 2005 that my job (which had
always involved driving long distances to jobs) changed to a mainly desk
job, and I started commuting to work by bicycle. This continued in my new
job last year after my previous job terminated. At the end of June this year
I completed 25,000 kilometres of commuting. I agree that the effect this has
had both on my physical and psychological state is priceless.

As a Type I cyclist I heart ily agree with all you said. Congratz on the
kilometers.
However I've read that we need to do some weight bearing exercise as
well in order to increase bone density.
Keep on cycling!
