Question from a friend, I answered Gatorade, but maybe someone here has
a better idea.
Here is the question:
my father in FL has diabetes and at the moment also has a stomach
ailment....................well, that is he has diarrhea
extraordinaire....................................
given the diabetes, what would be something he could drink that would be
as beneficial as Gatorade but not have sugar?  Something for electrolyte
balance.........
Merci

Diet Gatorade? I know I've seen it!!

Note, though, that Gatorade is not a miracle drug for all ailments.
The salt and sugar are great for replenishiing a body duriing heavy
exertaion, but unless your dad's sweating up a storm and not getting
enough salt or carbs from other sources, he may not need anything like
it.

So, water is usually just fine, and thirst quenching and inexpensive
as well. A squeeze of lemon for taste, or considering he's in Florida
and may have fabulous fruit available this year, a little splash of
juice containing only a few grams of carb would probably be tasty and
refreshing as well.

Is your dad taking any other medication? Diuretics or kidney
medication that may affect his salt levels, and require him to be
cautious with his food and fluids beyond just diabetes?

I'm goinig to follow up to myself: thinking about this, it may be a
really good idea for your dad to talk to his doctor or nurse
practicioner or whatever to get clinical advice, and to find out what
to look for to decide "gee, I really need to go to the hospital".

I was also just thinking about chicken bullion, the stuff in the cubes
you can get at the supermarket, for high salt/low sugar content. Or
decent chicken broth if you, as an adoring child, could make some for
him.

when sick, i drink regular ginger ale with a pinch of salt in it........
stir out the bubbles so you don't get a gurgley stomach

the regular gingerale replaces food for me, until i can hold something down

Kaopectate takes care of the runs........

Gatorade is nothing more than sugar water with salt and potassium in it.  I
have never been told by a Dr. to take it for diarrhea.  My daughter has been
told to take it when she was throwing up or had a fever.

You can get sugar free sports drinks.

Reply from my friend:

Thank you to Marshall and friends.......this is good info for us as we
wait for the doctor to call back to let us know whether we should take
my father to the hospital  now......or wait for an office visit
tomorrow.....
