I se government as nothing as a gatekeeper.   It steers
a society in some direction which we hope is
fair and positive.    It controls almost all of our
activities and anything else is an illusion.

The idea in the US and most of the civilized world
is to use this entity to steer our society in a better
direction.

Like ants the work is done by the masses.  Since
a barter system is impractical. The idea is to use
"money" as a tool in providing a fair system to
distribute the results of the masses efforts.

My class of people seem to think there must be
a way for provide for collective needs.  Other
artificial ideas seem to make some think they
should grab all they can.

The creating of unnecessary misery and suffering
is not the goal of a human. It my be the goal of
a subhuman  but the others have a right to
restrain that behavior.

The rest is fluff and smoke screens our human
goals.

Slavery is always around covered with some
white wash.

Rights and obligations always go together.

Fail to fulfill your obligations and you have no rights.

Alas, this is stupid thinking.  It assumes that the
government is composed of supremely wise individuals,
who can accurately preedict the consequences of their
actions, and the actions of others.  All of these are
false, as we HAVE seen.

We have had two recent financial crises, both of
which were easily foreseen, and the government
did not use its regulatory powers to prevent either.
We would not have the internet if everything was up
to governments; the private UUCP and BITNET and CSNET
and others were in place before ARPANET was set up
for only authorized communications, and finally these
were combined into INTERNET.  Small computers, which
are now most of the workhorses, were originally
designed and built by amateurs.

The cheap and fast decoding of DNA is largely the
work of one man, who was DENIED government support,
and had the resources to start his own company.

So much for intelligent decisions; he achieved the
government's goals by going outside their means.

I have been in academia for 60 years now.  In the
first 10, the rapid expansion of the universities
was accompanied by even more rapid raising of
standards, despite the efforts of the educationists
to dumb down the children.  With the influence of
the educationists and the dumbing down, even few
PhDs are getting the basics of their fields; this
is not where the paying research is.  So we turn
out technicians instead of scholars, the foundations,
which enable most of the breakthroughs, are not
being taught, and throwing 50 technicians at a
problem where 2 scholars with 5 technicians under
them will do a better job IS more expensive.

There is no way to fix the public schools now;
there might have been 50 years ago, right after
WWII, but it would have taken a revolution in
the school process to do so.  We have to let
those with ability use it; No Child Left Behind
means No Child Gets Ahead.

Much more good has been done by those you call
money-grubbers than if the governments used that
money.  Those who wrote the Constitution were
quite aware of excess government control.

Rich people do not sit on their wealth, or their
descendents will start out poor.  They use their
wealth to have more produced, and all benefit.

I suggest we use the politically incorrect means
needed to prevent this.
