Are there people on this group who are low carbing and NOT taking any
diabetes meds or insulin?  How long have you been low carbing using
diet and exercise alone?  By low carb do you not eat bread or rice,
etc. or do you eat small amounts with a meal?  Is your low carb diet
high in fats?  Do you eat a lot of vegetables.  Any fruit?  How many
times a day do you eat animal protein?  Are low carb diets necessarily
high fat?

Many thanks,
Dolores

Yes, I've been controlling my bg with diet alone for about a decade.
Often without exercise.  My one hour post prandial is typically below
130, usually below 120.

By low carb do you not eat bread or rice,

I don't eat starches.  I eat heaps of veggies and salad with my meals.

Yep.

> Do you eat a lot of vegetables.

See above.

  >Any fruit?

Berries, in season.

I eat animal protein at every meal.  High fat is typical of low carb
diets, and some of us emphasize that they come from healthy,  unpolluted
sources.

Me.

How long have you been low carbing using
> diet and exercise alone?

Almost 8 years.

By low carb do you not eat bread or rice,
> etc. or do you eat small amounts with a meal?

Never eat rice, pasta or cereal. Have the occasional low carb bread.

 Is your low carb diet
> high in fats?

No, just the fats from a few nuts, olive oil, olives and avocados.

>Do you eat a lot of vegetables.

Yes, megaloads of low carb vegetables, in meals and as snacks.

 Any fruit?

Some, usually low GI fruits like berries, dried apricots.

> How many  times a day do you eat animal protein?

I have 1-2 eggs at breakfast, about 3 ounces of some kind of meat or fish at
lunch, about 3-4 ounces of meat at dinner or about 6 ozs of seafood.
Sometimes a little cottage cheese throughout the day and yoghurt.

> Are low carb diets necessarily

No.

Yes

3 years, I think, since I've no longer needed metformin

>  By low carb do you not eat bread or rice,

Not regular bread/rice, no. I prefer a veggie base to sauces, etc. I
eat Dreamfields pasta occasionally, I'm one of the lucky ones there.
If I need a bagged lunch for work, I might use a low-carb wrap.

>  Is your low carb diet
>high in fats?
Almost none for breakfast. Today I'm having aubergine parmigiano for
lunch, I wouldn't call that low fat, but it's not particularly high.
Supper is pork cutlets with swede/carrot mash, and Jerusalem
artichokes; again, not terribly high fat, but not low fat either.

> Do you eat a lot of vegetables.
Typical menu above. What's a lot?

>Any fruit?
Not necessarily every day, but a bowl of berries with yoghurt is a
common lunch; I adore plums in season, and will often take an apple on
a walk. Dried apricots and prunes are occasional snacks.

>How many
>times a day do you eat animal protein?

A couple of times, maybe - not necessarily, but it's rare to have a
day free of animal protein, because I'm a great believer in getting
amino acids the easy way. And I like the taste...

>  Are low carb diets necessarily
>high fat?

No - but they shouldn't be low fat either, or you'll struggle.
Besides, many nutrients are fat-soluble - you can't use them unless
there's fat present.

I use a low carb diet plus oral med (metformin) and exercise. It you eat
high carb foods, you need to exercise portion control - obviously. You
should also be aware of lower carb alternatives - e.g. Oroweat Double
Fibre bread is significantly lower in net carbs than others (I have seen
similar products from a couple of other companies); recently low carb
tortillas have become available in our area; Breyers Carb Smart ice cream
is significantly lower than others.

Yes, I eat lots of vegetables - at least compared to previously - other
folks might consider it still not a lot. I eat fruit sparingly - in
season 1/2 graprfuit for breakfast; grapes and especially cherries are
rather low in gylcemic index - I have them on occasion. Animal protein at
least twice per day.

Low carb diets are not necessarily high fat, but there are only three
options: carb, fat, protein. Dr. Bernstein in "Diabetes Solution" makes a
point that if you severely reduce carbs then the fats seem less damaging
- he doesn't specifically state that in so many words, but that's what I
got from it and I think he has data and experience to back it up.

I'm not sure if I would count as low-carbing or not. I eat on the
low end compared to current recommendations but much more than
most people who "low-carb."  I've been doing it for about a year.

My diet is not high in fat, though I only specifically limit
saturated fat. I eat vegetables or fruit with most meals. Animal
protein with most meals. (Try to emphasis fish and poultry, but
also include red meat, eggs and low-fat cheese.)

I do eat bread (a lower carb variety)  and rice, preferably brown.
Also pasta and beans and some lower-carb desserts.

That's pretty much what I've been doing for the past 10 years. I eat
very small amounts of carb-dense foods. When I've checked, I get about
70% of my calories from fat, and I eat, on average, 1500 calories/day. I
try to eat at least some protein at every meal, but sometimes the
protein is in peanut butter. What all low-carb diets have in common is
that they're low-carb.
