when those of you who are on pump give yourself a dual wave bolus is there
any general rule of thumb that you use? For example if I have a piece of
carrot cake with cream cheese icing I find that my initial bolus will cover
me for the lifespan of the bolus (ie 4-4 1/2 hrs)but after that my blood
sugar rises. Another example would Quaker Oatmeal to Go bars which do the
same thing. Do you check the carbs and compare the simple sugar versus the
starch for an idea of how to dual wave or what? Any help or guidance would
be appreciated. Obviously, I realize that heavy carb foods like this are the
exception rather than the rule but, what the heck, every once and a "blue
moon" isn't going to hurt me too much given that I'm normal weight and have
good A1C's. Thanks.

As I posted a few minutes ago, I would caution you against taking
anyone's advice here on dosages and timing.  While we all enjoy sharing
our tricks, techniques, etc, NONE of us should be telling anyone
SPECIFICALLY how much or when to take insulin.  I suggest you talk to
your endo if you don't understand the dual wave.  Even MiniMed will
refuse to give you insulin dosages.  They will only tell you HOW to
program, but not when or how much.  Good luck!  It's a great feature for
those problem child meals, like pizza and mexican.

Good luck? That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid by expanding my horizons
with other people's input. I never rely TOTALLY and COMPLETELY on anyone's
input but the input of various members with their experiences is valued
nonetheless. I asked questions to grow my already existing knowledge of dual
wave boluses. (BTW, I understand the dual wave quite well but others may be
able to provide some insight of their own.) Let me make it clear, I'm asking
for programming TIPS and not for SPECIFIC dosages. My apologies if that's
how my post appeared but your reply seems rather alarmist to me. So, once
more if anyone has any TIPS about programming it's would be much
appreciated. (And for Dave's sake please keep in mind I will take it all
with a grain of salt.).

:)  I think you took my post wrong!  I meant good luck with using the
dual wave, once you gave it a try.  I thought you were hoping someone
could recommend an amount for the initial bolus versus the square wave
bolus.  I only use the dual wave for those times when I know that I need
some fast insulin plus some over time to cover the lingering bg raising
action of pizza and mex.  I don't have a magic formula; I just go with
my prior knowledge of what those foods do to me.  I wouldn't even begin
to think that MY experience would be valuable to anyone else, as this is
definitely a situation where the phrase "YMMV" is apropos.
