Prozac and HypoGlycemia

Hi everyone, I was directed here by someone in my depression forum for
help.

2nd day on Prozac. Blood sugar shakey (or at least that is what it felt

like)

I am not diabetic, but I do have low blood sugar problems. Some say it
could be anxiety, but anyone who has had a hypoglycemic crash knows
they don't want this to happen. I've passed out in the past and it's
frightening. If it's anxiety, I'd stick it out because I got a little
taste of "normal" and I don't want it to go away.

If it is my blood sugar, I don't read anywhere that it goes away, and
I'd have to stop taking it for safety's sake.

Anyone know about this? SO I am assuming if it is the low blood sugar
side effect won't go away with time?

I am wondering if I should wait it out???? It *felt* a lot like my
blood sugar crashes.
I actually started to feel a brightening already and my thoughts
weren't negative and obsessive for a day
WOW.
ANd I actually felt my libido rising from the grave after 20 years.
GASP.

So I'd like to keep taking it. But passing out from low blood sugar is
a deal breaker for me.

Thoughts, opinions, etc etc Thank you

If you're not diabetic, you're on your way, if you don't get your
hyperinsulinemia under control.

What are you doing, dietwise, to control it?  One thing I've noted for
years is quite a few anecdotes by women who no longer need
antidepressants once they get their hyperinsulinemia/hypoglycemian under
control.

Small, protein based meals and snacks, with no starch or simple sugars
cured my hypos.  I can go up to 6 hours without eating now without those
awful shakes, irritability or clamminess.

Hi Susan,

I've lived all my life with it, so I control it by frequent protien
rich meals and make sure I don't let 3 hours go by without something.

It was actually under comtrol and has been for a while until I started
Prozac a few days ago.

I've been eating protien meals several times a day. I'm feeling shakey
today and did not take the Prozac.

I just got back from the drugstore. I was going to purchase a blood
monior to see if it's anxiety or sugar and it cost $80!! I don't have
that money so I am empty handed and still not knowing.

Do you keep those meals also low carb?

Protein rich didn't work for me til they were also low carb, higher fat.

I highly highly HIGHLY recommend that you do whatever you can to get
ahold of a meter. There are cheaper meters out there  - the folks here
recommend the Relion from Walmart, which is about 20 bucks. The True
Track that I bought at the local drugstore was also about 20 bucks. The
strips are where it hurts.

Without a meter you won't be able to tell if you really are going hypo
or if you are high coming down to normal.

I always thought I had "low blood sugar" because I was shaky if I
didn't eat or if I ate carbs on an empty stomach.  Turns out I was
spiking pretty high then dropping quickly back to normal, and rarely
went truly low.
Unfortunately I had been "feeding the crashes" for way too long and if
I don't already have T2 diabetes I'm right at the brink of it.  Don't
let this happen to you....

Talk to your doc about the Prozac, you may be able to switch to one
that gives you less problems.  I was on it once for about 3 weeks but
got colossal headaches from it. Ended up on Zoloft which has worked
very well for me.
>From what I understand Prozac is an older SSRI and isn't as "clean"
chemically as some of the newer ones - it's a little less specific and
has a few more side effects than some of the more recent ones.

My dad is diabetic (type II) and I'm going over there today to pick up
an extra meter he has. I have stopped taking prozac on day 3 until I
can check this out.

Your right though, it could be very unstable.

You can get those things for free!  Every company wants you to have to
buy their strips.

Best bet is a Relion meter from Walmart; it's cheaper by half, I think,
and the strips are the cheapest on the market.

I'm waiting on a call back from my psychdoctor.

I also gained 2 lbs in 3 days.. not good as I had weight loss surgery a
month ago.Yesterday I was voracious. I think more than low, my blood
glucose was unstable.

Damn it.

Leen, you may need a consultation and cooperative case planning between
your psych and an endocrinologist.

Hope you get it straightened out soon.

I just looked it up: hypoglycemia is a not uncommon side effect of Prozac.

Hi Susan,

I am not having much luck with either actually. When i told my endo
that I was depressed she said "Why? Why are you depressed, your so
pretty?"

!!!

I just got the phone with my psydoc and he seemed like "Huh?" I asked
him if it would go away because I like the fact it was lifting me and
he didn't know.

Nice guy but I'm wondering if I should seek out someone else?

Your endo sounds like a moron.  Are there any others nearby you can try?

I'm sorry, but you've had a serious adverse reaction, and neither of
your physicians is prepared to help you?  Did your psych offer to
investigate and get back to you promptly?  If not, you may need to do
some research about better docs available to you.
