I read the article; I am slightly suspicious about some
of the statements. But even if it is as stated, this
is NOT evidence that Rezulin should not have been approved,
or that it should have been withdrawn. In fact, if Avandia
and Actos were not far along in the approval process, it
would not have been withdrawn, according to the FDA.
BTW, those latter two do not have the sudden effects of
Rezulin, but seem to have other risk factors, hard to
detect. There are NO safe, effective drugs.

I had a long chat about this topic with my doc awhile back. He stated
that of all the diabetics he'd treated with Resulin, the only problems
he'd seen were where some other doc before him had prescribed the drug
without doing the necessary bloodwork. As long as the kidney and
liver function was verified before prescribing and again shortly
thereafter, resulin was as safe as any other drug. He also stated
that he's yet to find a replacement that works as well, particularly
for "problem" diabetics with very high insulin resistance. He said
that he's had many patients who were forced onto insulin when resulin
was forced off the market.

I suppose that by that logic, there are no safe substances on this
earth, period. By a more rational analysis, almost all are. That's
why the good Lord put a big ole brain between our ears, so that we and
our docs can read and understand the risks and control them. Rezulin
was, unfortunately, just one of those drugs that the media and some
"advocates" (sic) latched onto and stomped it into the ground. Of
course, they don't care what their actions did to those for which
there is no adequate substitute.
