Hi all

Just came across the offer on the DESMOND site to fund local areas in
this study on testing - OK it's funded by DUK, but worth alerting
local areas about.  I've sent it to my nurse.

Plus you can train as a lay  educator if you wish

I wrote to these people - here is the reply

<<Dear Helen

Thank you for your interest - you did not make clear where you heard
about the study so I am assuming you saw some information on our web
site.

The self-monitoring study is a randomised controlled trial being run
in
a number of sites around the country. Newly diagnosed patients are
being
invited to attend a DESMOND education programme where they are
introduced to either blood monitoring or urine monitoring.  The study
is
just starting and unfortunately because of the nature of research it
will be 2 to 3 years before the results are known and published.

I'm not sure if your interest is general or because you are interested
in taking part. Unfortunately because of the design of the study
people
are not able to refer themselves. Also the study is looking at newly
diagnosed patients - ie diagnosed within the last 3 months. We may be
running some focus groups in a years time where people with experience
of self-monitoring discuss how they are getting on. If you are
interested in hearing about these I could put your name and contact
details on the list of people who have expressed an interest. It would
obviously depend where in the country we run the groups.

And here's the next letter

Hi helen
To become a DESMOND Educator I'm afraid you need to be a Health Care
Professionl. However we are running a study looking at the role of lay
educators. This is being run in a number of sites around the country
but
at present is only recruiting in Leicestershire. If you live in that
area my suggestion is to get in touch with Panna Madalia who will be
able to tell you more (panna.mandalia@uhl-tr.nhs.uk)
Thanks
Helen

Note the poor capitalisation etc... This is not the message from the
website

I am majorly disappointed in this... it isn't as displayed on the
website and is, as usual, going in the normal "Oh you don't qualify"
sort of way.  However, even though people can't refer themselves I do
still think it's worth passing on to health professionals who may be
able to work towards getting their PCTs involved... which is why I
posted it.

I went to their website to try to understand exactly what
they now teach in DESMOND.

It's not exactly clear. To save me reading all of these
http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/library.html
can someone give a quick explanation of the programme?

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

DESMOND) http://diabetes-support.org.uk/Dafne%20account.html

NO it isn't !
DAFNE is a method for carb counting for T1s on insulin and DESMOND is
for T2s in general. One of the first things the link you provided says
is ...
***Many ideas and principles used within Dafne are likely to be
completely inappropriate for type 2 diabetes.***

Can I add to that, any T1 who has insulin resistance (through age, that
is natural) needs more insulin but we are talking a range from 1.5 units
to 3 units per 15 grams. You must know what effect each drop of that
insulin is going to have on the amount of carb you have eaten. It also
differs through out the day but in a known pattern. T1s use a lot less
insulin per day.
T2 IR would make the maths impossible to work out because the level of
resistance is not known in advance.
