Loss of weight and injection sites

Hello folks

I wonder if I can ask for some more advice.

A few years ago I became ill with something not connected with my
diabetes. It did affect it though and I have battled to keep my sugar
levels as stable as possible. Throughout the period my hb1c has stayed
under 6 and last week it was 5.7 :o)

My weight loss though has been very substantial although, thank
goodness, last week at the diabetic clinic I had gained a few pounds,
the first in 2.5 years. It really cheered me up.

Unfortunately though I now have no fat on my legs and arms and I'm
having to inject my stomach only. Recently some of my blood tests have
been higher than expected and I am sure it is the injection sites that
are causing the problem. The doctor last week said the only
alternative was to start injecting my buttocks.

Do many folks here use that area and is there a noticeable slower
absorption rate? I keep reading about that and it's putting me off. I
will give it a go, but at 70+ my hands are a wee bit stiff and painful
and it will be awkward for me.

I've spent most of my adult life on insulin and feel so frustrated at
this age to be having the problems.

Sorry for the moan.

If you don't get a good answer here and need to find more
diabetics to ask, try newsgroup alt.support.diabetes.

the bum route does tend to be a bit slower.

You might find the Novolet or a similar device useful as it's primarily
for people with dexterity problems. It could help you with using that
site.

The other option is the thigh muscles as that is a reasonable site to
use. I tend to use them for basal insulin. Insulins are labelled as
being suitable for subcutaneous or intramuscular use so injecting can
also be done into muscle tissue as well as fat

Thanks very much to both of you.

ratty, all my life I have done my best not to inject into a muscle.
When I was a child the doctors scared the living daylights out of me
by saying if I injected into a muscle I'd go hypo very quickly. I had
absolutely no idea I could do what you suggest. Mind you, in those
days I was also told eating this or that would kill me. Isn't it
amazing how things have changed.

I'll read up about the Novolet.

Thanks.

you only have to worry if you exercise that muscle after you take your
shot........ the exercise allows the insulin to be released quicker
