Please help - Re Diet - Diabetic
I apologize in advance if this sounds in appropriate.
I am looking for a 2 or 3 page doc that lists all the good foods for
type 2 diabetic patients.
Most articles talk in terms of high fiber, low fat etc diets. But what
are high fiber foods ? etc.and they hardly list a few specific foods.
If they would list the food specifically - like say a fruit: apple or
a nut : walnut, it would be so much easier than for ignorant people
like me to have to find out what is a high carb food or a high fiber
food etc., what is high in the bad fats etc.
Can anyone pls send me a link to a page that lists such foods in a
simple manner specifically listing such foods. I am sure that it is
out there but I have not see it.
I have been compiling a list of foods...but I am never certain how
accurate I am nor is my list long enough to give me a variety to
consume.
I do not know if others have the same issue. I apologize if I sound
like I am not with it.
Thanks,
Ayesha Hill

Others will probably be along shortly, but I keep this book:-
http://www.whsmith.co.uk/CatalogAndSearch/ProductDetails-The+Fat+Fibre+and+Carbo
hydrate+Counter+-9781921259630.html
within reasonably easy reach.
It's not the 3 page document you want, but it's fairly slim & quite
comprehensive. It also lists the calorie content of the foods listed.
As a basic rule, the less processed the food, the better, so wholemeal
bread is less bad than white bread, fresh fruit beats preserved & so on.
It's a bit of work sorting out what's what, but worth it in the end.
Animal fats are worse for you than vegetable fats & oils, and
hydrogenated fats (Used in some processed foods & some margarines) are
becoming less well thought of.
"Eat the rainbow" is a good idea, eating fruit & vegetables of different
colours during the day. Variety is the key. Fruits which can cause
problems for me, & you may well be different, are strawberries &
bananas. I can eat raspberries until they come out of my ears, but they
send the blood sugars of other posters here through the roof. The only
way to find out what's good & bad for *you* as far as blood sugar goes
is to test before & after meals & after every time you try a new food.
If you're newly diagnosed, read this:-

and Alan's stuff here:-

It's a bit unfortunate you've joined, but welcome to the club. :-)

Oh, & ignore Chung. Everyone else does & will continue to do so until he
starts talking sense.

Not possible. I'm speaking as an old Type 1: Given the huge variety of
wonderful food in the world, quite a lot of which is modest carbohydrate and
glycemic index, the list is a major portion of all food worldwide.
I'm afraid you're stuck looking it up based on carbohydrate percentages and
maybe "glycemic index". And tolerances for Type 2's vary, so you need to work
with a diabetic or their nutrition consultant directly to get a good sense.
If it tastes sweet, or would give a normal person a "sugar rush", avoid it.

Ain't no such thing, unfortunately; food I could eat without affecting
my blood glucose, you couldn't; and vice-versa. Low carb is generally
safe, if you have a problem getting test strips; but testing
everything you eat, and your exercise pattern, until you know how your
body reacts is the safest bet. John's already given you the key to
health, that newly diagnosed link.

Nicky's advice is very solid and good. I've been fortunate enough to see it
for 3 years now.
At the beginning, I tested a lot. Everything I ate went through the testing
process, one hour after the end of each meal. Fortunately we have a good
health care system here in France, so I had plenty of strips available. Now
that I know where I am, I test only twice a week. Since I have narrowed my
diet to the good old favorites, I don't need to test so much. Yes, it's
boring, but it's safe. And safe is what counts for me.
Nicky's best advice: what is good for her may not be good for you, or for
me. You have to test for yourself. Diabetes, especially type 2, is NOT a
one-size-fits-all disease.
And do follow the good advice another poster gave you. Ignore Andrew Chung.
I only wish there was some way to make him go away. He is a dispenser of
wrong and sometimes dangerous information.

If you're using a newsreader with the killfile feature, you can do as I do
and add Ch*ng to your killfile a few times a day, and then you won't
download any more messages he sent with the same return address.
Using a rule based on his name instead of his return address works
better, though.

I decided that it was worth paying for a newsreader with a filter that
would cope with Chung and his ilk. I gather the newsgroup is a PITA
without that facility, which is a great shame.
