Hi Everyone,
I am going to post this on three Diabetic pages, not because l want
different views, but hopefully to get one answer!! I have an ulcer in my
right foot, and for years they have suspected me of being diabetic, (the
foot is nueropathic). Anyway 2 weeks ago, they did a random test, and they
say my sugar level is high, they suspect l have gone diabetic. Since that
day, l have not drunk any alcohol, or had any fried foods (my down fall). I
do a blood test in the morning and it reads 13.5 average. l do have some
blurred vision, but with a rub it goes. With this high reading  13.5, do
you think it will be the daily injections straight away, or will they give
me tablets and diet control (l hope), or better still the all new inhaler?
(5 weeks a ago, l was only 4.5 to 7.1 (max after a meal). I am going for my
next fasting blood test in the morning (2nd one). They also said my
cholesterol was high, so l have started drinking Benecol, is this ok if l
am diabetic? I have now started taking Kwai )galic) tablets as well. Any
advise l would appreciate. All l will have today is pasta and sauce (sugar
free), muesli (Sugar Free) and 2 wholemeal cobs.
I am 49, and certainly obese (23 stone).
Thank you for reading me.
Robert

Hi Robert.

We are only patients, not doctors, so we can't really say
what "they" will do. You need to continue seeing your
doctors - ask them to answer that, and follow their advice.

However, we can offer some suggestions on what you can do to
help yourself.

First, you seem to be under the mistaken impression that the
biggest problem in your diet is fats and alcohol. Wrong.
Although excess of fats or alcohol in your diet is
undesirable, the component you need to learn most about is
carbohydrates. It is the carbohydrates that are becoming
glucose (sugars) in your blood and giving you those high
readings.

You need to do some things as a matter of urgency. First,
make sure that leg ulcer is properly treated by a doctor
qualified in diabetes wound management. Second, to help that
wound heal you need to learn about the effects of food on
your blood glucose (BG) levels. Healing will be delayed if
your BG's are too high.

To learn more about that, and what to do next, read
http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm
If you put that into action, I think you will see very
quickly why "pasta and sauce (sugar free), muesli (Sugar
Free) and 2 wholemeal cobs" is a very unwise choice of menu.

This is something else I wrote for newly diagnosed, it may
help:
