6 months from dx for me, nothing since... but as a well-controlled T2,
I wouldn't expect anything different.

Hi Dave,

My diabetes clinic has one routine appointment per year.
My previous clinic had one per 6 months.

Take care,
Phil.

Three weeks in Ealing, they didn't think I was an urgent case or I could
have jumped the queue.

Well I have been diagnosed 2 months.

No information.  Just a meter and some tablets.

No info on when to test or anything!

Yeah. And when you get it, it'll be boilerplate and aimed largely at
T1s - unless you're hugely lucky. Diet in particular is a minefield;
the standard advice is to base your diet on carbohydrates. When you
start using the meter, you'll quickly discover that carbs in large
quantities are not going to be good for you; and specific carbs don't
agree with you at all. Problem is, neither the NHS nor us are going to
be able to predict which they are; you have to do the testing and
discover what your particular idiosyncrasies are. For instance, I
cannot eat oatmeal, but can eat as many carrots as I want. Some people
are exactly the opposite.

The other thing that won't be in the literature is that you will have
different degrees of carb tolerance at different times of the day,
depending on where you are in the diabetic progression. My pattern is
that I can cope with almost no carbs at breakfast, but by supper time
I can have a fair amount.

Metformin is a very helpful drug - with some really interesting side
effects. If it's giving you the trots, back the dose down to the
minimum possible, wait until you're used to it again, and then
increase the dose a notch.

Exercise is amazingly helpful in curbing bg spikes. If you're
sedentary now, try a short walk about an hour after eating, and see
what it does! If you're active, weightlifting is exceedingly useful
for diabetics - and magnifies the effect you get from metformin.

If you want a good book whilst waiting for the NHS misinformation, try
Gretchen Becker's Type 2 Diabetes; The First Year. She covers all the
basics.

And we have endless patience with questions. BTDT :D

Hi Dave,
Who diagnosed you ? and how ?
Who gave you the meter ?
Who have you seen so far ?
The tablets are metformin presumably ?
What have you been told about a "clinic" ?
Is the clinic at your Doc's practice or at the local hospital ?
Has your practice got a Diabetes Specialist Nurse - if it has, give her a
buzz.
If there is a Diabetes Centre at any of your local hospitals try get in as a
patient there rather than at your practice.

>Who diagnosed you ? and how ?
GP and local hospital OGTT and other blood tests

>Who gave you the meter ?
GP

>Who have you seen so far ?
Nobody but above

>The tablets are metformin presumably ?
Metformin, Symvastatin

>What have you been told about a "clinic" ?
I'll be going to one I was told.

>Is the clinic at your Doc's practice or at the local hospital ?
No idea

>Has your practice got a Diabetes Specialist Nurse .
They have I will be querying the practice today

>If there is a Diabetes Centre at any of your local hospitals try get in as a

NO idea.  Not given any info.

I have done nothing so far because I was told the initial things would happen
quickly.  Apparently my idea of quickly and the NHS is different!

OK Lesson learned.  If you think you are entitled to something ASK!
I contacted the Surgery this PM.  Now have bloods on Friday and a Clinic
Appointment for two weeks.

Insist on the blood results in your hands - don't be put off by "it's
normal" or any such stupidity. You're going to want these as a
benchmark, and future ones to spot trends.

My GP is pretty good at giving out results, thankfully.
It is other stuff they seem to have a problem with.
