Due to another disease, my weight dropped by five stones in seven months. It
seems to have stabilised now, or at least the rate of weight loss has
slowed. (I think)
Back then I was taking two x 500 mg Metformin twice a day.
After a small meal of say cheese and a lot of leaves with a piece of bread,
numbers would be 12-13 at the top, from say 5.
The other thing forced me to stop all animal produce and no dairy or eggs.
This past month or so, checking numbers at 1 hour and then 2 hours - hardly
rising at all - and today for tea, a lasagne made with Quorn mince - white
sauce made with Oat milk, plus salad and a small garlic bread - numbers went
from 4.3 to 6.1 at the 2 hr mark.
On top of that - I haven't been taking Metformin for more than a month now.
I forgot to re-order and the surgery is too far away for just the one thing.
I don't eat anything fried unless it's well-dabbed with paper towels, most
of what I do eat is steamed or microblasted. No margarines or other spreads.
Olive Oil only.
So - question - has my diabetes gone away?

First, congratulations on the weight loss. That's an
impressive achievement. Have you reached your final target?
Your diabetes has not gone away. Think of it as a sleeping
Doberman. Properly fed and looked after, it might stay
happily in it's kennel, but fail to look after it properly
and it can get savage again and bite you.
Without going into every detail, your post shows a confusion
as to what foods cause your BGs to rise and what doesn't.
Excess fats will raise weight - but not BGs. You're right to
choose good fats like olive oil - but even bad fats won't
have a direct or immediate effect on blood glucose. The
things that raise your BG's are the carbohydrates - the
breads, oat milks and so on.
This will assist you to find out exactly what does, and does
not affect your BG's: http://jennifer.flyingrat.net/
You are doing most of that now; that just shows you how to
do it systematically.
On the metformin; I suggest you discuss that with your doc.
It's not usually wise to change a drug prescription -
starting or ceasing - without proper advice.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

The weight loss wasn't a deliberate thing. Cancer has done that and now I'm
under weight.

All dairy was stopped and because of Geneisten in soy milk, which aggravates
and inflames cancer cells, the only substitute is Oat Milk, or nothing at
all. I use perhaps a litre a week.
I eat as few fats as I can - or as far as can be managed. I certainly make a
deliberate attempt to eat as few Omega-6's as I can - they are converted to
Arachidonic acid which promotes angiogenesis in cancer cells. Flip side is
Omega-3's which have a calming effect on them. It's difficult and
frustrating trying to find foods that will not cause more harm and at the
same time, help get some of that weight back. I'm practically vegetarian now
with the exception of Salmon - but that has to be Wild salmon - the farmed
fish - due to the feed - has over SIX times the Omega-6 content of wild
fish.
Bread I eat is from Nicky's recipe, posted a few weeks ago. A 2 ounce slice
each day is adequate.
I know what does (did) and doesn't (didn't) raise numbers.
Not wishing to strain my kidneys, I eat very little protein - apart from the
fish. That leaves little option but to eat a lot of vegetables, cooked and
raw, to fill me, but my appetite is very reduced now from treatment effects
of that other disease.
I had hoped - thought, that the weight loss had 'cured' the diabetes,
especially with the low numbers and me not using Metformin.
Seems I was wrong.
Thanks anyway.

Unfortunately, the quick answer is.... nope! It's still there and will be
until the
day you pass away. Your weight loss has helped reduce your Insulin
Resistance
quite a bit which has helped reduce your glucose reading and now is
allowing you
to have a wider variety in your diet. Sadly, _IF_ you go back to eating
like you
were prior to being diagnosed diabetic, your glucose readings will return.
You
might not catch them right away.. you might have spikes into the 4-5hr(s)
another
reason 1hr testing is a waste imho. But over a few months time your A1C
will
begin to reflect those uncaught spikes and the onset of possible damage
again
begins...
I would suggest continuing what you are doing now. Those are good readings
from what you ate.. It was a healthy meal, hopefully it satisified your
hunger and
you didn't get much of a rise from it.
I also would suggest you talk to your doctor about restarting Metformin if
you're
able. It not only will help keep the IR at bay, but it's been found to
have some
wonderful health/heart benefits even for non-diabetics. It's given to many
because
it doesn't (or shouldn't) lower your glucose.
Congrats on the weight loss, better health and hope all continues to go
well for you.
