"Taking prescription drugs to prevent diabetes cannot be justified when
lifestyle changes are just as effective, say US scientists. "

Yes - if the doctors are right about the causes.  If they're not...

They may be correct; I tend to agree that d&e is a most
important part of the regimen to attempt avoidance of future
diabetes and also future complications for those diagnosed.

But doctors should still have the responsibility to make
prescription decisions on individual cases. That's apart
from the controversy of what lifestyle changes are
appropriate, particularly diet.

However, my antennae rise when reports like this appear in
the press, in the same way that I was worried when two
poorly performed reports came out in Australia and Canada
claiming that "frequent" BG testing did not improve diabetes
control.

Not much later things changed in your strip prescription
rules and our mob stated mumbling about strip costs. I see
access to test strips as an integral part of making
effective lifestyle changes.

Don't be surprised if this report re-appears as a support
for tougher rules on medication dispensing. The combination
effect of reports like this could be governments restricting
subsidised access to both medications and strips.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Our Secretary of State for Health, currently being described as the
"worst ever", is an Ozzie btw - you can have her back.

We could do a deal. We'll take her back if you take back all
the union shop-stewards who came out here to continue a
class war we didn't have...

Swaps?
