This is a bit strange, I had a dream last night that I was having a hypo
and needed glucose tablets, I remember that I couldn't find any and then
found a couple of almost empty packets and took those.

I'm pretty sure it was a dream, but when I got up and started to work, I
felt like sh.t, exactly as I do if I've really had a hypo and I had to
go back to bed for a while.  My bg on waking was normal to high.

Now I don't sleepwalk (as far as I know), but it's just kind of spooky.
Did I have one or not?  Did I get up and fix it while still asleep?   I
know you can't tell but has anyone ever had a similar experience?

Yes, I have, and more than once.

Do tell what happened Al.  Did you actually have one or was it just a
dream?  Or don't you know either?

The Hypo Dream, happens to me too!

I think I'm dreaming but feel strange. But most of the time I realise
that I AM in fact awake, and the pieces fall together. Nip next door
(it's where I keep the meter, in the computer room) and usually get at
least below 4 reading.

Presumably I become lucid enough to sort it out, but I could see the
sorting out also being dreamlike if I went low enough. I'm lucky that I
get good warnings.

I sometimes wake knowing that I`m half awake, and stagger ( on one occasion
crawl ) along the hall to the hypostop in my living-room. But I never
remember getting back to bed, though I do.

On other occasions I don`t remember at all whether I did actually have a
hypo, until I discover I`m short of hypostop or Luco tabs or dextro trabs
whem I should not be.

I've had MANY MANY dreams of being hypo, and the result was always waking
with a HIGH bg. (liver dump no doubt). When I've woken DURING one of these
"i'm having a hypo" dreams, I WAS hypo in the real world, so I think 2
things are happening.

One is the dream is a defense mechanism to wake you up and do something and
the other is it's a "reminder" to your counter-regulatory system to do
something if you DON'T wake up:-)

You are not alone in this.

I'm glad I'm not alone, I thought I was going a bit doo-lally.  I've
been trying to make sense of it.  I sort of decided it must be an
unconscious thing telling me to wake up and take some glucose, but  I
don't think I actually did.  I guess, as I've been eating carbs recently
, maybe my liver did its "dump" and I was OK.  The problem is, I have
the awful feeling I [slept?] walked around the house looking for glucose
tabs and maybe found some, then sleep walked back to bed.  I keep so
many half empty packets around in every room these days, I can't tell
whether some have gone or not.

All I know is that I seemed to have the feeling of having had a hypo
once I'd got up.

May I make a suggestion?
Keep a bottle of Lucozade beside your bed.
Regards, Robert.

I used to always have a pint of milk with me when I went to bed, (don't
anymore since I binned off human insulin as my basal) but I seriously doubt
you went walkabout and didn't wake up:-)

When I've gone SERIOUSLY hypo during the night, it's been a time of
devouring. Anything and everythng would get downed and bollocks to how I
felt 20 minutes later:-) I can't imagine sleeping through THAT.

Then you probably did have a regulatory response Bob. Over the years, that
response has got a lot weaker with me, but also over the years, I've changed
insulins from time to time and now I use beef, it's been a LONG time since I
had a hypo so deep it required a "natural" response.

I love the "slowness" of beef and also it's mild effect whenever I HAVE gone
hypo. I was under the impression that Lantus was supposed to have the same
profile as beef, but from what I've been reading lately, it doesn't seem so
to me.

Trouble is i don't think I could take beef insulin.  Having been a
veggie for so long, I just find the idea of injecting beef rather
upsetting.  It sounds ok but I just couldn't (yet).

Still who can tell where I'll be in another year?

It's not for everyone Bob, but I think even Muslims are allowed to use it.
Same with the Jewish folk. They can use pork insulin, but if you don't feel
like it's the one for you, no-one (least of all me) would insist you use it
or even try it. If all else FAILS mind you, it's an option and I have to
tell you, it doens't LOOK like a cow :-))

Lantus is supposed to have a "beef-like" profile though, so if you've not
used that, it's something to consider. Some people love it, some don't, but
you don't know until you try. I actually disliked the idea of injecting beef
myself before I was backed into a corner with hypo problems and decided to
give it a shot. I'm bloody glad I did too, and now I'm building stocks to
ward off the day whe it's pulled from the shelves like I'm usre it will be
one day. I've already got about 5 years worth and it's going to be 20 years
worth before long.

Who can tell where ANY of us'll be in a year. I hope it's still here, but
life can be a bitch.
