Yolande, are you the same person as the one on the Hansard site who
mentioned doing the OU Living with Diabetes course? If so, what do you
reckon to it?

You found me out!  I joined the course because I could get little or no
serious information about diabetes locally.  I am a little disappointed in
the course itself because I don't think it lives up to its title "Living
with Diabetes" - it is slanted more towards "Caring for people with
Diabetes".  In other words, it addresses mainly the concerns and duties of
health care professionals rather than those of us with diabetes.  Nothing
wrong in that but it was not what I was looking for.

However through the communication lines opened up by the OU computer system,
to which you can only have access if you are a student or tutor, I have
gleaned from other students with diabetes a great deal more info - such as
the existence of the Hansard Group and the existence of this group.

Hmm - not what I'm after either. There were a couple of other courses that
people on the Hansard site mentioned that sounded interesting, I'm hoping
someone's posted some details when I haven't been looking : )

I've still got an active OU account, I think - are there open forums, rather
than the diabetes course one which I assume is closed, for diabetics?

I expect so - but I'll have a look and let you know.  Don't know if the
general student forum for SK120 is open to those not taking the course (each
region has also a forum which is not accessible to others) - you could log
on to see.

What were the Hansard courses mentioned? - I find it hard to trawl through
all the messages.

Well, there's Desmond, of course - but that  Alan Charlton guy has mentioned
a few juicy things:
"On Wednesday in Gateshead I attended the second of three "Diabetes Do Once
and Share" Project Workshops run by Dr Sue Roberts, National Clinical Lead
for Diabetes. "
" Diabetes UK provided me with the training in becoming a more effective
Service User Representative (thanks to Ann Rowe) and I now work as part of
the Durham & Chester-le-Street PCT Diabetes NSF Local implementation Team. "

Incidentally, there's a note from the moderator on the General forum to say
that they're going to archive the current posts and start again - so if you
need to catch up, do it quickly!

They note:

"A summary of what has been discussed to date can be viewed
in the weekly summaries page at
http://www.diabetesdialogue.org.uk/summary_of_discussions."

I think you'll be disappointed.

From over 180 "General" posts so far this is all they've
summarised:

Week 1

General

   * The cost allowances for consultations
   * ‘Wish list’ for all Diabetes Care Teams
   * Increasing support for the patient, the family, the
carer.

Week 2

General

   * Chiropody services for people with diabetes
   * Diet – matching the insulin to the carbohydrates
   * Student diabetics care
   * Local diabetes networks

*sigh*
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

None of that sterling job that guy's been doing on promoting low carb? -
shame. He needs more support, then! Maybe we ought to discuss low-spike. I'm
busy until Monday - got my brother over from Australia - but will drop back
then.

Yeah
It's a shame, the low carb guy (Nigel) and Dr Katherine Morris have
been rubbished by a couple of die hards.  I gave up with it a while
back as I have limited time after work to look at it!

Dr Katherine is a shining light!  Shame no-one is listening!
