Thomas Muffaletto - 31 May 2005 19:21 GMT Well I did another 30 minute work out on my stepper today. its really hard for me to do right now but I do it. I put the music on really loud and just get lost in the music and not think about working out - but I still keep in mind to have proper form. When ever I am done working out I feel so much better inside. music and everything else just seems so much better. I find myself singing along with songs and feeling really good. when I don't exercise I feel depressed so much so I bet if a doctor can tell how I felt I probably would get medications but when I work out that all goes away. if you feel depressed and don't exercise - TRY IT.

This is a good analogy for one dealing with their diabetes "one step at a time." Keep up the good work and I agree with you, exercise can put one in a much better mood.
Best, Kurt
Thomas Muffaletto - 31 May 2005 22:26 GMT I tried to include my reply to you in the other post but I sent it up too fast. each time I remove the weights that assist me I am taking another step closer to using the stepper with good form and no assist. when using the pull up bar there was no way really to chart my progress.

I had a very bad lower back. I was taking Vioxx which worked like magic but then they took it off the market. I tried Bextra but it didn't work near as well as Vioxx and then, they said it was bad too.
My girlfriend had a stepper that she never uses. She prefers to get her exercise outside, biking and running. When I moved in she talked me into trying the stepper, I was surprised to find it did not hurt my back, all other means of exercise did. Now, 18 months later, my back almost never bothers me. I credit the stepper for strengthen the muscles in my back. Every day I do 30-60 minutes on the stepper while watching TV or listening to music. A real experience is to use canal earphones and watch movies or music videos while exercising. It is like being in another world. The canal phones fit in the ear canal like hearing aids and isolate you from all outside sound.

When the pain gets bad I go to a chiropractor. It usually takes 3 or 4 visits to get back to normal. He has repeatedly told me that exercises to strengthen the muscles is my best bet for long term relieve. I have tried the exercises he gives me but I can't do enough of them to help because of the pain.
I have never tried a stepper, they have several in a gym at a military base I visit. I'm going there this evening and try it. If I can use it, maybe I can get results like you.

Are you still taking medications for your back? if not and you feel it is because of the exercise - talk to your doctor about doing crunches.
Steppers are a fantastic machine to give the lower body work out. they help build bigger muscles in your legs and butt when compared to a treadmill. it is very important to follow the instructions closely while using a stepper. getting back to Kurts post for a moment and his comment about taking 1 step at a time. even tho I am not doing the 30 minutes with out cheating - I am doing what has to be done in order to complete the 30 minute work out with cheating and yet keeping the best form I possible can. I tried something new today. I used to use the pull up bars on my pulley machine to take some weight off. today I hung a long bar between the 2 pulleys and used that to give me enough of a cheat to complete the 30 minute work out. this way each week I can remove some weights until I am not getting any help and still using the best form I can. I never let my knees go past my toes while doing any kind of leg exercise -

palm - 08 Jun 2005 20:46 GMT I have diabetes for couple of months, but I exercise (more or less) all my life (I am 53). I am bicycling, and till year ago, had different "NordicTracks" at home. Year ago (not in connection with my T-2) I bought treadmill. Yes, it's expensive, I paid for mine, like $600 (including $100 for extended, three years warranty) but, with my lazy a.s, I think it worth it. The trick with treadmill is, that when you set it on 3.5 miles in hour, you walk at a speed 3.5 miles in hour. I never could force myself to keep speed (on bike or "NordicTrack") for longer then ten minutes. Then I "swim away" with the surrounding or whatever I watch on TV and slow down, till I remember what I am doing and speed up for, some time, again. Can't happen on treadmill! So, with treadmill, I exercise more effectively. Cheers. Palm.
Thomas Muffaletto - 02 Jun 2005 18:43 GMT Yesterday I did about 1 hour weight training. I have been keeping track of the weight I use and this time used a little less. I love to work out with functional trainers and cant think of any single machine that does more. they come in all sizes and prices. if you want the best one that is the life fitness dual adjustable pulley system. I have yet to find one that does as much and believe me I checked but like I said they come in many shapes and prices. look for 1 with a 4:1 resistance those will give you a great work out but not much for body building - that is one of the things mine has over all others I have seen it has the most weight. you can also do weight assisted pull ups with it along with any exercise you can think of or make up. today I did another 30 minute work out on the stepper and it was easier then the last time :). I sweat like crazy but feel great.

the only thing that does depress me is that I feel I am not doing all I can for my diabetes if I do not exercise. by exercising i have nothing to be depressed about. of course exercise does do more than help out my fight with diabetes. Tom

Thomas Muffaletto - 06 Jun 2005 21:07 GMT Just finished a 1 hour weight training work out. I started off with 5 minutes on the stationary bike for a warm up. followed by 3 sets of 50 crunches with 37.5 lbs the first set of crunches I lost count and may have done about 70 lol I lost track thinking about all the craziness going on in here as a result I ended up on the floor with cramps and didn't do the other 2 sets of crunches till the end of the work out. followed by 3 sets of 20 for each of the following flies lat pull downs side laterals curls tricep curls
I am not really body building at this point so for me the leg work out is 3 days a week using the stepper. if my upper body starts to get much bigger than my legs I will start to weight train them as well.
I feel great. soon I will include in-depth details about my meals and the blood sugar levels.
30 minutes of cardio each or every other day also works very well.

I am happy to see that I showed progress. usually the stepper would show that in 30 minutes I walked up 50 flights of stairs ( yea I know but that is what it says ) today it showed 52 flights :). 1 step at a time - 1 floor increase at a time. it really made the end of the work out something special for me to see that extra 2 flights. the scale also showed a loss of 8 pounds this week.

fasting Pre-breakfast 1 hour after breakfast 2 hours after breakfast pre-lunch 1 hour after lunch 2 hours after lunch pre evening meal 1 hour after evening meal 2 hours after evening meal bedtime
If you're exercising, don't do the next test - the exercise should take care of any loose carbs. Just one set of tests around a meal, plus the carbs and protein eaten, would be fascinating.

Thomas Muffaletto - 11 Jun 2005 10:16 GMT Today I had a really good work out :). for 1 I invented a new to me exercise - double arm tri cept cable cross overs :). that worked my triceps unlike any other exercise I have ever done. I also changed the way I did curls today. usually I would do double arm preacher curls today I back into the machine had my arms at my sides like a regular curl - wow much better than free weights. constant equal resistance throughout the movement. I have done cable curls many times in the past but nothing like this. When it comes to muscles its either use them or lose them - your choice. I lost mine but I want them back. 30 minutes - 1 hour every day or every other day is all it takes for a better life. I just finished working but wanted to do my exercise log before I shut down. Next time I weight train I am going to try eating more and see what happens.

Thomas Muffaletto - 15 Jun 2005 19:45 GMT Even tho I have not posted about it I have not missed a days work out in a while. I no longer cheat while doing my stepper :) but I do hold my self up slightly with the support bars. today I did 1 hour weight training and I love to see the progress I am making. I never kept charts like I am doing now. in the past I would just hit the weight and do what ever I felt like. now what I do is 3 sets of 20 for each exercise - I pick a weight that I am able to lift 20 times max and need to rest. I stay with that weight until I can do 3 sets resting 2 minutes between sets. recently I added some weight to my curls and was only able to finish the first set of 20 after that it was 10 reps for my 2nd and 3rd set. today I completed 2 sets and maxed out at about 15 on my 3rd set. I figure I should be able to do the 3 complete sets on Friday. right now I am doing 3 days cardio for 30 minutes - last cardio I kept my heart rate between 140 and 150 for 30 minutes. I am wondering if that is how I should do my cardio - use the heart rate monitor instead of just thinking about what level I am on. I no longer feel I want to hide behind my jacket in fact with the crunches I am doing I kind of like walking around with just a shirt on. I am doing it - you can to. just 30 - 60 minutes a day that time will pass no matter what you do. in fact when I feel like I can not complete a set I think that way - 1 more minute at a time its going to pass anyway might as well do something good with it.

I must deal with that 20 minutes if I want to be able to move at all. if I lay down again I will have to deal with it all over again. but I will do my 10 minutes today as per the doctors request. Tom
Thomas Muffaletto - 07 Jul 2005 06:11 GMT I went to the physical therapist again today because the Hydrocodone aint killin the pain. it took all my strength to be able to walk to the corner store. but after moving around 30 minutes in extreme pain everying is fine. it only happens if i lay down - it did get worse since the 4th of july and that might be a sign that I was to active. I was told not even to do the 10 minutes on the stepper but she does want me to do some stretching and light crunches. I talked her into letting my lift some light weights. Tom

I did my weight training with light enough weight that I did not feel any strain on my hips. basically 1 arm at a time to lessen the load. the amount of weight and reps on my crunches was cut way down. for now I am doing 3 sets of 20 with only 20 lbs. I was using 42.5 pounds 3 sets of 20. while my work out may have sound like a nightmare to some in here it wasn't really that bad at all. no body knows what caused the pain but there are some suspects. while I worked on my raised flower bed - at 1 point I did do more than I should have. <-- more than any exercise I do.
it could have been a new exercise I tried and started with to much weight. <---- biggest suspect.
it could have also been that I increased the time on my stepper too fast and didn't let my joints adjust ( smooth out or what ever ).

That is great Tom. You are doing a lot more than many of us would do, especially while in pain. I do my darnedest to work through my back pain when I can, but as you know it ain't always easy.
You have shown me and others that one can work out in spite of pain and get some progress going. Keep it up and keep us informed.

I do my darnedest to work through my back pain > when I can, but as you know it ain't always easy. Well I get motivated thinking that this extreme pain will end soon. I have found in order for my pain killers to work I have to take double the recommended amount.<--- not advizing anyone do the same. the next time I see my doctor I will bring it up.
> You have shown me and others that one can work out in spite of pain and > get some progress going. Keep it up and keep us informed. I can honestly say this post has touched me. sure if it helps motivate others I will post about it. all I can say is learn from my mistake - I wont say I was working out to hard because I dont know - but I am pretty sure if i took things slower and looked to protect my back more from the begining I would not have this problem. I know most of the exercising the physical theropist is telling me to do but working with her is helping me do things like stretches. there are different kinds of stretches. i kind of think of my physical theropist like an affordable work out trainer. if I didnt have insurance it would only cost me $40 a visit. my insurance will only pay for 30 visits per year but I think I am going to continue working with her for a while. this might lead into a yoga class for me - or kick boxing im not sure. thanks for the post and good luck with your exercise. I am really happy to read about dianas exercise as well. lol she is now working more than I am supposed to :). Tom

Without

Thomas Muffaletto - 12 Jul 2005 00:36 GMT Good news is that today was the first day I didn't need to take pain medications. I hurt a little in the morning and now I just feel like a played a game of football. during these last 2 weeks I fell back into the comfortzone and am feeling very lazy.
I was finally given enough exercises today that actually feel like I am doing something. mostly just stretching and these will one day become a part of my wieght training work out.
I have been given a lot of thought to what could have caused this pain and what on my part I could have done wrong to pinch this nerve ( im pretty sure that is what it had to be ) the weights I was using are more on the light side of strenth training and I always felt better after a work out than before. one of the things I liked most about my new dual pulley system was that I could do things like bench pressing while standing. if you stand for a second and picture youself benchpressing some weights you will notice your legs have to push forward while your torso is pulled back from the wieghts. all that stress is held at my spine. picture a football player getting tackled from the front at the chest and from behind at the legs. I dont know if i am right about that but I do not like that strain on my lower back. soo looks like I will be buying a bench and might as well get one with a leg station on it. I would like to start working with weights again on monday. bad news is i have to make room for the new bench so I am going to get rid of my stationary bike or my stepper. I am thinking about selling the stepper. I dont know how much I will sell if for yet maybe I will just put it down stairs in storage and wait until I can get about $600.

Thomas Muffaletto - 13 Jul 2005 19:51 GMT Starting over. today I did my first work out with a few different exercises. all I did was 10 minutes on the stationary bike level 1. some stretches and a few regular crunches. then I did 20 crunches with 20lbs followed by a few more stretches. as little as it was I felt more tired than my work outs before I pinched my nerve. it is going to take will power to get excited about this work out but I must start over and the first step is preparing my total body. in a way I am glad this has happened once I get back into the swing of things I believe I will be a bit more healthy and flexible.
