Metformin and high fiber diet causes a lot of gas, has anybody got a
home remedy suitable for a T2 diabetic. I haven't tried beano because
of its expense and I don't want it to affect my BG. So I thought I
should ask here first. When it gets real bad I have had to take
Mylanta tablets, I don't know if they are bad for me so I save them
for bad cramping.

You might consider asking your doctor(s) to switch you to the extended
release formulation which may be better tolerated by you while on a high
fiber diet.

Metformin tends to convert carbs to gas.
Switch to a no-carb fiber supplement and reduce other carbs.

1. Begin with 500 mg Metformin increasing slowly
2. Swallow the Metformin with the last bit of your food

You might ask your doc to change medication, If it won't help.

I cut the fiber intake down and added a stool softener to reduce my gas. An
occasional tub of Yogurt helps also, for me.

Too much fiber can cause digestive troubles.

I had the wold championship problem with metformin and needed to take
immodium-type pills every other day.  My MD switched me to the extended
release, 1000mgs 2 times a day, and it is working so far(knock on wood).
It has bee 5 1/2 weeks since my last immodium:-)

Given your writing in the past that you are status post polypectomy, I
would suggest you inform your doctor(s) about the rectal bleeding
instead of just eschewing fiber.

A few posters have reported that their gas/bloating/diarrhea problems seem
to be related to the simultaneous presence of carbohydrate and metformin in
their stomach/G.I. tract.

Cutting carb intake at times when you take the pills might help you.
Don't be afraid of zero carb meals now and then.

High fiber diets will cause gas without the metformin.

High fiber and metformin can be a dangerous combination for some people.
Passing gas when you have loose stools can be embarrassing to say the least.

I forgot to add,

Have you tried taking Beano or  Bean-Zyme? They will usually help with the
gas produced from a high fiber diet.

I started using Psyllium Husk in tablet form. Allows me to rip one,
without being close to the john.

G'day G'day Tommy,

Simethicone 125 mg is effective in relieving the cramping effects
inherent with gas. It is found in Degas and in diarrhoea chewable
medications such as Imodium Advanced.

Best wishes,
