I PASSED MY EMT STATE EXAM!!!!! Hopefully I will be transferring to Western
Carolina's 4-year EMS program (bachelors degree) in the near future. WCU is the
only school in NC that has that, and one of 15 in the country. My choices are
limited. I'm currently in my community college's EMS program (associates
degree). I'm the only "teen EMT" in my class.

Congratulations! Welcome to a very rewarding calling!
Never forget the basics.
Paramedics save patients. EMTs save paramedics.
Is the scene safe? Studies have consistently shown that patient care
suffers when the EMT or paramedic is dead.
If the ambulance never gets to the patient, or the patient never gets
to the hospital, patient care suffers. Drive accordingly.
Airway: It's very easy to turn a simple heroin overdose into a
full-fledged cardiac arrest, simply by failing to keep the airway
open.
Breathing: Pre-hospital and hospital care providers who know how to
properly use a BVM are rare.
Circulation: Just because someone has been pulseless and apnic for 5
minutes does not mean they can't attack you. Stay calm - they can't
keep it up for long.
Never trust the paramedic or doctor to yell "CLEAR" before they hit
the little red buttons.
Never permit the patient to move away from the shortest path to the
ambulance. I don't care what's up that rickety set of steps to the
attic.
Anyone running away from an ambulance does not need an ambulance.
Do not be afraid to ask for help when lifting a patient. Many macho
people who are on permanent disability.
Protect your hearing.
Only laugh at people who say "difibulator" when they can't see or hear
you.
Never assume a patient is lying to you. Be prepared in case they are.
Always treat the patient as if you believe them. If the patient is not
faking, you will look like a genius. If the patient is faking...name
one thing you learned to do to patients in EMT class that was
pleasant. Take your consolation there.
There is no complaint so small that the patient can't die from it. The
nurse or doctor who screams at you for bringing the patient to the
E.R. will generally stop when the patient codes.
Do not hurt civilians who ask you why "Ambulance" is spelled backward
on the truck. Remember the paperwork you'd have to fill out.
Document, document, document. Five years from the call, when you're
testifying in court, you'll be glad you did.
Keep a private notebook to document harassment and anything you
observe that is illegal. Wait until after the shift to write in it.
Sign and date each entry. Let family members know about the book, but
never mention it at work.

Thanks for an excellent post A policeman I know says he must
be a professional and stays detached when dealing with clients.
In his case they are hitting on the cop, not him personally. Says
it removes a lot of stress and potential problems.

Congrats to You! My Daughter became an EMT in her 20's and enjoyed it very
much. Imagine that being in Detroit. Anyway's she is now studying to become
a Physician's Assistant. Instead of a Dr. cause she wants the paient
relations that are not there with being a Dr. She often told me that "She
alway's wondered what happened to some of the
patients she came to get to know", That's why she want's to be a P.A.
instead of a Dr.
