I thought I would let you know of my progress since getting home from
the hospital. Tuesday I went to the surgeon for (hopefully) the last
time. His nurse removed the remaining staples. Laurie said it looked
like about 35. Some of them hurt a little bit. The nurse said, "Those
have some kind of scaly skin growing over the staples." I told her
that is probably my psoriasis. The important thing is they are out and
the doctor saw no signs of infection, etc.
I am waiting for the diabetes education center to contact me about
insulin management classes. So far I am on one 30 unit injection per
day of Lantus and it just is not doing the job to my satisfaction at
all. This morning my FBG 180. We divided an entre at our favorite
restaurant and I will guarantee if I were to check it right now it is
somewhere north of 200 (probably close to 300 or above.) I am
certainly not happy with that. When I checked it at bedtime last night
it was 330. When I asked the doctor about going back on the oral meds
he said you weren't doing well before the surgery, so I want to give
them a chance to get you regulated. It better happen pretty soon. I
have never had numbers like these since being diagnosed.
I am feeling better, but still get sleepy way more than I like.
I guess that is it for now.
Take care.
Test, test, test.
Be well.

I forward these statistics with the greatest degree of respect for those who have given the ultimate price.
On July 11, 2008 the total of Americans killed in Iraq was 4118.
United Kingdom = 176
Other = 138
Even one death including Iraqis is too many.

I remember when they removed 30+ staples from my surgery wound, when they
took out my adrenal gland...some of those hurt like heck. Glad to hear you
are doing well. Hopefully you and your Dr can get your BG down to where it
should be. Take Care.

I find that high bgs make me sleepy, so that could be a contributing
fctor, in addition to the post-operative business.

Quasadilla Fajitas. 35g carbs in the tortilla. The rest was meat and
grilled veggies.

I've come to realize that 35 g of carbs would make me spike. Probably for
several hours. ;-( I have one Mission brand corn tortilla (10 g net carbs)
quesadilla every few days. I'd love to have a plate of cheese enchiladas,
refried beans, rice and a side of five corn tortillas, but . . . ces't la
vie!

I called the diabetes education center today. I have an appointment
next Wednesday, but the nurse is not there so I will go back on Friday
to meet with her. My doctor had me increase my Lantus to 36u. I
decided to inject it into my belly instead of my arm. Not a good idea.
It hurt - a lot and it still hurts. Tomorrow evening I will go back to
injecting it in my left upper arm.

Grandpa Chuck:
1. Stay away from the belly button.
2. Probe lightly with the needle for a painless spot. When you find it,
push in the needle quickly and inject slowly.
3. Divide your dose of Lantus and do an am and pm injection. A lot of us
metabolize insulin differently than Sanofi Aventis believes we should.
Dr. Bernstein recommends that all his patients do this.
4. With your numbers, you'll need to experiment, but I would bet that
the additional 6 units of Lantus won't do the job unless you cut your
carbs and up your exercise.
5. Consider the butt as a nice big, mostly painless area to inject. You
can do this lying in the fetal position in bed, or, once you get used to
it, do it while standing.
Good luck--God bless.

Also...
Diabetics shooting large doses can make their shot of insulin more
effective by shooting half the dose in one spot and shooting the other
half in another spot. This all has to do with the body's immune response
in attacking the insulin shot and neutralizing some of its effects. This
is why the larger doses of insulin are less predictable in their effect
than the smaller doses. The larger the dose, the more vigorous the
immune response.
Uncle Enrico - 26 Jul 2008 20:02 GMT
One last comment:
The immune response is not the only factor in the lesser effectiveness
of large dose--the ratio of surface area of insulin to tissue is another
factor. So the divided shot can be helpful, particularly where major
insulin resistance is a factor.

Good to hear from you Chuck. Guess we will have to work on our numbers
together now that it *seems* our other stuff is done. My A1c was the
highest I have ever known it to be, but I was not surprised with some of the
readings I had had.
Glad you got those staples out, and all is going well. Jim is glad he had
the robotic surgery. He is completely back to normal now, just a few weeks
following his surgery. He not only sounds and looks well, but he has
brought his cholesterol down, and has brought his weight down as well.
Everything is below 200.
Picture of his robot is on my blog right now.. He has no scar to show,
though. Hope for continuing best for you!
