I reluctantly switched to this meter after I was old my Ascencia meter was
discontinued. Although the Contour is quicker and requires a smaller drop
of blood, I am getting a TON of errors and wasted strips. It seems to sip
the blood almost until the strip is full and then it sort of burps. There
will be more blood to sip up but it stops sipping then beeps and gives me an
error. Once I wasted three strips just trying to get a reading. Is anyone
else having this problem? Now I find I have to make a much larger drop of
blood than is needed and plunge the strip deep into it and hope it sips
properly. Very annoying. The problem is not limited to just one canister
of strips. The last one did it and the new one is doing the same.

I am using the Contour, and I did so far not have the problem you
describe. Of course, it also happened from time to time that the blood
quantity was not sufficient, but this is very seldom the case. So I
would say either the meter or the strips you use have a problem.
Can you try to contact Bayer/Ascensia and ask them whether they would
exchange your meter and the strips for new ones? I was able to do that
with a Boehringer/Roche meter once (it was a "Glucotrend Premium"), and
they sent me the new one for free even before I sent the old one back.
Just describe to them your problem in detail, I'm sure they do
everything to make you happy with their product... ;-)

Yeah, I might do that. I too have had the problem where the drop of blood
was not big enough. But when that happens it is obvious.

I had a One-Touch, and thanks to advice from some people in this ng, went to
CVS and bought their newest meter ($19.95) and some test strips (they cost
half of what the One-touch strips cost). For the first few days I checked
using both meters -- the CVS was always about 4 points less, so I get 76
instead of 80. But certainly nothing bigger than that. And according to
people here, a 10%-15% deviation among meters is acceptable.
Otherwise, the meter works beautifully -- a minute drop of blood, and it
beeps, stops sucking, and starts calculating. 5 seconds later I have the
results.
Something to think about.
And no, I don't own stock in CVS.

We don't have CVS here. And my insurance covers the strips.

IMHO 10-15% is as good as you can expect and about as good as it gets -
still not acceptable.

I used one for a year or so and loved it. Never had a problem - don't
think I wasted a strip. Call them. They'll probably be quite happy to send
a new meter and 50 or 100 strips.

I use and prefer the Contour. It is very good for me in it's ability
to pickup blood and the reading are very reliable for me.
I am old and shaky. If one of these involuntary movements
interrupts the pick of blood the meter goes to error as it should.
The way the pickup spot approaches the blood sample seems to
be important.
The blood sample should have surface tension and form a semi ball.
When it does not happen for me, it indicates contamination.
The meds you take may be a factor.

Okay. Thanks. I have rather thick skin and do have trouble getting a drop
of blood.

I don't know what other ones they cover. Bayer is all I've ever had.

Can you elaborate on that, Kate? I see the strips are somewhat cheaper
than the OneTouch Ultra or the Freestyle Freedom. I was going to pick
one up the next time I needed strips, mainly so I can incorporate the
download to computer in my software.

the Bayer meter is not as accurate as the Ultra meter is, based on
comments from other Bayer users that i've spoken to
Minimed just changed the meter that works with their pump from the Bayer
to the Ultra Link

Thanks Kate. I just got another Safeway flyer, and they are
advertising the iTest meter (Accu-chek, I think). 100 strips are about
$60, with a free meter, of course, so I am researching the iTest now.
I sure wish they'd put meter specs online so I wouldn't have to
download the (nearly 6MB) PDF file just to see about the software and
download capabilities.

Julie, I use the accucheck, and it will give me an error message if I don't
wait for the little signal that it is ready to accept the blood sample. I
turn on the meter, and have to wait for a little beep that shows a pictogram
of a finger and a blood drop. If I put the drop on the strip before that
beep, it gives an error message. Your meter may have that same thing.

Nope. Mine has the little pic and it's there. I put the strip in first,
then get the drop of blood.

Julie, call Bayer, the number is on your meter. Most of the reps are
well trained and can help. I think you need another meter to try.
I have aways had good help from all reps.

The Accuche(c)k/Glucotrend meters I used earlier could be used in 2
ways:
1) Put in the strip, wait, apply blood - or:
2) Put in the strip, wait, take it out, apply blood, put it in again.
Method 2 was what I used when it gave an error due to not enough blood:
I just applied a bit more blood on the same test strip, started the
meter with a new strip, took the new one out and the other in. This
worked 99% of the cases.

Hmmm... I will try the 2nd method with the Bayer if that happens again.

Yes I use one of them and also find it usually very reliable, BUT very
occasionally I've had a strip which doesn't sip properly. I guess
manufacturing tolerances.
It sounds as if Julie's either got a duff batch of strips or a duff
meter. Even if not, try contacting Bayer and see if you can get some
freebies out of them!
