This one on Angkor Wat (city temple) is equally respectful and informative. Thanks for sharing.

Did I send you any pics from our mountain hideaway? I'm gonna try to get back for another three month stay in the Fall (USA).

It's unfortunate that you weren't able to spend more time in the area, and with someone like my wife's sister-in-law, who speaks excellent English and knows where everything is, as a guide.
Regarding His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej (Rama Gao - the ninth King of the dynasty) and the Royal family. He is a people's King and greatly revered by the Thai people. He helps his people in every way possible, as does the Queen and as did his late daughter, the Princess. He is also a well studied Buddhist monk. He has been instumental in preventing bloodshed during the various coups that have taken place in Thailand since his ascendancy to the throne in 1946. He is a descendant of King Chulalongkorn (Rama Ha -the Fifth King of the dynasty), who was the young Price in "Anna and the King of Siam." Buddhists throughout the world revere them. We have pictures of the current King, his family and all nine of the Kings of the Adulyadej Dynasty, in our house. I wear a small picture of Rama Ha on my necklace.
Do you have Jun's Thai recipe book?

Thanks for the info on the King. I thought it had to be something like that. The initial impression was that it was just too "over the top", but gradually I came to realise that it had to be genuine. In some of those shacks by the river the most valuable item was a large framed portrait of the king or the royal family.
I did a lot of walking, both around the Khao San road region and around one of the major shopping areas a few miles away, but I only had one full day and another afternoon there. And I spent far too long in cabs back and forward to the hotel.
I found it interesting and I hope to get back someday. Maybe I'll get back in touch then so I can meet your wife's sister-in-law:-)
Grand Palace in a day or two, mainly photos for that one.

While you were ther, did you get to see the scale model of Ankgor Wat and the wall of murals showing the history of Siam/Thailand?
The rule of thumb on removing footgear is always when entering a Buddhist temple and whenever you see a pile of shoes outside any door, be it a home or a business. You should also avoid stepping on the raised entry way of any temple door, as this is considered bad luck.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do," eh?

If you find that low-carb Thai recipes website, I'd be real interested. Right now, all I do is exercise portion control on noodles and cornstarch thickener, replace sugar with Splenda when I can, and eat almost NO rice. Mostly portion control on everything, as I hate to make Jun cook one batch for herself and family, and another batch for me, although she doesn't mind.

I watched a programme yesterday that was not joking about the main trust of Japan's anti-smoking campaign. Was nothing to do with health, but because people were getting seriously burnt at crossings and in the street. The campaign's leading image was of a kid whose eyes were at fag-in-hand height... The guy moved to Japan for a few months to give up smoking, and wrote a book about the experience. He's hoping it'll cover the £23,000 costs of losing his habit :P

There are many who prefer to choose one place and stay much longer; that doesn't suit me, although I do it occasionally. Each to their own.
Consequently, I tend to pack a lot into my short time in each place. On my first trip, I didn't think I would ever get the opportunity again so I saw as much of the world as I possibly could in five months. On the second trip I did much the same, seeing new places but re-visiting my favourite places or people in the South of France, Paris, London, Oxford and New York. This time I did that again.
So much to see, so little time (and so little funds:-) that I try to make it count.
Maybe I just have a short attention span:-)
