The asparagus has arrived! The asparagus has arrived!!

(a la Steve Martin in The Jerk with the telephone directories)

They've started cutting the local asparagus this week, I have not one
but two bundles in the fridge.

Didn't eat it today as I did chile con carne over a small sprinkle of
rice, I was pretty sure I could get away with it as I've been fairly
busy.

Walked downtown and back to do the shopping (which is when I found the
asparagus), I also have some more purple sprouting, portobello and
horse mushrooms and the usual collection of peppers garlic etc. plus
some succulent local lamb cutlets. They'll go well with the asparagus.

I ran out of mealworms (no I don't eat them myself I feed them to the
blackbird who has become so tame I have to watch I don't tread on him.
He comes over when I'm in the garden, or turns up outside the window,
and makes himself look extremely anorexic while fixing me with a
desperate pleading look. When I'm not looking he is actually
disgustingly plump) so we went off to the birdfood shop.

Mother's gout has worn off again so she was up for a short walk, in
fact when she got there she ended up going for quite a long walk, I
found her a nightingale to listen to (they're quite common here and
sing during the day as well as at night, but they've only just arrived
in the country along with many other spring migrants) and we strolled
around the common in the warm sun, trying to avoid the biting wind.
Chatting to several people and their dogs, as is usual.

This evening I rather overfed us both and decided to go up the local
lane to see if the sunset was worth photographing (it wasn't) but I
had another pretty decent walk up and down the hill, saw a huge hare,
a muntjac deer and gazillions of birds and wildflowers.

My BG didn't drop nearly as low as it has done on some occasions
recently after a postprandial walk, in fact it's been in the fours all
day (70 - 90) except for a 6.1 (110) after breakfast and some fives
(around 100) from time to time.

Not low enough for remedial action but I had a square of 85% chocolate
after the walk anyway, and I just polished off an excellent avocado
(the previous one went black before it ever got ripe and the little I
ate had the consistency of vulcanised rubber, this one was just
perfect, avocados here seem to do that)

Seeds are popping up in the trays I have started in the spare bedroom
and also in the garden but most of the latter are weeds which will
need editing over the weekend. And it's finally gotten warm enough for
the compost to start digesting, which should hopefully see off the
hyperactive ants which have colonised one of the bins.

All the gardens are full of tulips and flowering cherries just now,
and the lilacs and early clematis are starting.

Can you tell my mood improves in spring?

It improved even more when I read this

most entertaining

Now I have some stuff to do while watching a Sally Field film.

Y'all take care now . . .

Mmmm - a great time of year, culinary speaking :) Next treat is
cherries... something that doesn't make my urine smell odd, thank
goodness!

Cool!

I've just got a wormery. I have several hundred new pets, and not a
whole lot of an idea on how to look after them! Eeeek...

Doh - to get the pdf you have to hit download, took me ages to work
that out... yes, a good read. Really beginning to feel like the tide's
turning... I see the BBC this morning were amazed that a ketogenic
diet works for epileptic kids, nothing like OLD news, but still
another piece of support.

Lawn needs cutting, mutter.... I wonder how much grass cuttings the
worms can eat, if I mix it with guinea-pig bedding...

Could be from the same source, I don't know how many asparagus farms
there are in the area. You know the instructions on how to grow
asparagus?

"First prepare your bed, ten years ago . . ."

We had it tonight with the lamb cutlets and it was as good as I
predicted.

You too eh?

Yes when I discovered cherries are good for gout I bought mother some
and ate most of them myself, yet another fruit I *can* do, in small
quantities.

I'm still looking forward to runner beans, I weakened and bought some
imported ones t'other day as a spaghetti substitute, but they're only
at their best when you actually know the person who grew them.

Probably plenty of advice on the internet. I never had a wormery as
such but used to put the not quite digested yet compost remnants in an
open bottomed bin and the worms came in on their own. Not too dry and
not too wet is about all I know - and unlike compost you do NOT want
it heating up. Well the worms don't.

Sorry, I have Firefox set to save rather than display pdfs as default

There are a load of good papers on that site.

Pity the BBC report was run over photos of melting butter, and bacon
slathered in lard . . . still a little prejudice showing there I feel
from the muesli crowd

I did the lawn last week, was putting it off as long as possible as I
was still cutting it into December last year. Grass cuttings are a
pain, they go slimy at the earliest opportunity unless copiously mixed
with shredded prunings, I usually dump them in a pre-compost pile and
add them to the rest of the stuff later.

Nicky, have you seen http://www.cityfarmer.org/wormcomp61.html ?

Googling on 'vermiculture' will give you more info than you wanted. ;-)

Way cool - cheers, Nick :D  I think they've settled in, there's lots
of cohabitation going on in the lid...
