How do you enforce it? :) In our house the major things that go missing repeatedly: my mobile phone, my car keys, nail clippers, scissors, pens, tape of all kinds, flash drives, camera batteries, one son's wallet, iPod, phone... I have set places for everything and it really bugs me when I go to use something and it is not there! It bugs me also that everyone has to go searching for the one son's belongings 1 minute before he has to leave for work.

Do I sound harsh? I recommended a better place and he chose not to use it. I figure I'm giving him an incentive to adopt a life-style that won't get him fired every couple of months. "Harsh" would be following the temptation to add, "I told you so, didn't I?"

Well, we're both adults. We have a family of elves that finds us no matter where we move to & they arbitrarily take things from us & given them back, so normally we have an us against them thing going for us. But, we do each have things that are 'just so' for each of us. I employ an ironic line like wondering OUT LOUD where my clippers can have got off to, and use with it a mock glare (that I perfected in college while being on the other side of hazing) and a growl (that I perfected while training puppies.) Have you tried that?

But it had one redeeming moment. A story about spending all day trying to find their file on one of their vendors.
It was a dairy--they looked under dairy, milk, cream, the name of the company, the name of the main contact, the city, the state, etc.
When the secretary came back from her day off, they begged her to find that file FAST!
She turned around, opened a drawer, and handed it to them.

He found them under "E".

If it moves, file it
If it doesn't move, move it - THEN file it
