I'm diabetic. I now find that I have high cholesterol (HDL 6.6 and HDL

long does it take to see a drop in cholesterol (assuming theer will be
one!), now that I have drastically cut down on the saturated fats? Are we
talking days, weeks, a year?

What have you replaced them with? If it's sugar or starch, you're likely
to get a rise in cholesterol instead of a drop.
I think that the drops in cholesterol I've read about took months.

Is that total of 6.6, and HDL 1.4? That implies your high total
cholesterol is raised by triglycerides, and you should be cutting down
carbohydrates, not (necessarily) saturated fats. Have you read these

As for how soon - a guess here, but probably pretty soon if you cut
carbs down, because trigs are what the body transfers fats with; if
you get into ketosis (less than around 120g carbohydrate daily) then
the "glyceride" part of the trig is formed much slower. It'll take you
3-4 days to get into benign ketosis.

Actually, ketosis from either fasting (starvation ketosis) or
hypoinsulinemia (ie DKA) is not benign.
Indeed, there is evidence that one ketone that accumulates with low-
carbing, namely acetone, is associated with steatohepatitis.
"In particular, breath ethanol can be associated with hepatic
steatosis, and breath acetone can be associated with non-alcoholic
steatohepatitis."

Moreover, the half-life of acetone is quite long so that its level is
ever increasing with either low-carbing or fasting.

differentiation among words, defining terms and using common accepted
terminology --- not his style.
Interesting that the term "benign ketosis" is a frequently discussed
topic among physicians ans nutritionists
then there is the term 'black fat" appears in a few 19th century
nature books but there is no current discussion within the medical
community of this concept.
Could it be one person is off base in obssessing about "black fat"

What she says!
When I was put on a low fat high carb diet by numbers got
significantly worse, this is not uncommon (ignore bj, she's a
Martian!)
For normal earthlings, this can be a double whammy, the extra carbs
whack up the trigs, and the lack of fat causes the carbs to turn to
glucose quicker which whacks them up more.
Many dieticians have not learned this yet, but fortunately some have.

I agree with Nicky. However, it would help others to comment
if you also note whether you are type 2 or type 1 and a
couple of other numbers:
Triglycerides
LDL
Total Cholesterol (I suspect that's the 6.6)
HbA1c
Fasting BG's
Post-prandial (after-eating) BGs
Maybe you do need to cut sat fats - you didn't detail your
present menu - but I'll lay odds you'd be better off cutting
some carbs. But I'm only guessing without further info.
