OT - but just thought I'd ask, anyway. Does anybody have any idea why my
doctor would have put me on 2 different Cholesterol lowering drugs - Crestor
and Antara? Seems a little over-kill to me. I had some high numbers but not
horribly high.
HDL - 37
LDL - 92
Trigs -208
Total Cholesterol - 171

Quack? I dunno. My Dr. put me on one and my overall cholesterol wasn't
high.

Did you ask your doctor why he put you on two? You might find this helpful:
http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/antara_d04286_crestor_d04851.html
To me:
Your HDL looks low (mine is 106).
Your LDL looks high (mine is 30).
Your Trigs look high (mine is 41).
Your Total cholesterol looks high (mine is 144).
Can you eat fish? If so, try it.
Take care.

Your lipids are disgustingly good. Go away.
<G>
My LDL is still a bit high (or a lot high compared to yours) so I'm
happy to continue the Simvastatin, but the HDL and especially the
trigs fell in line by lowering the carbs, adding fish and getting more
exercise. The ratios are good.
I'd tend to suggest John try this approach too.

I asked him about fish pills and he said, yeah.

Fish pills don't taste anywheres near as good as fish. There are so many
kinds of fish, all with different tastes and textures, and so many easy
ways of preparing them. I got 861,000 hits when I Googled on 'fish
recipes'!
Try it! You'll like it!

I take fish oil caps that I don't taste at all.
People have told me all my life "you'll like it" but it never seems to be
true. Not just about fish. There are other things I just *don't like* even
something "tasty" "properly prepared" etc. & everyone else is raving about
it.
It can be very irritating to be told that you *should* like something. That
your problem is "you don't know how to cook it" & that's your problem
(even if you had it in good restaurants).
I know people who *don't like chocolate*. This amazes & mystifies me,
but I don't go around telling them they're just buying the wrong kind
or they don't know how to eat it properly.

Agreed. The capsules gave me bloating and fishy halitosis which the
complete fish never do (well OK perhaps unfresh mackerel occasionally)
Sorry bj! In you honour I am currently stuffing my face with
strawberries
If everyone all liked the same things there'd be no need for different
restaurants and cookery programmes and civilisation would probably end

If bj replies, I won't see it.

Yes but it must be really fresh (or tinned while really fresh),
there's a classic passage in one of Richard Brautigan's books about
what happens when you eat stale jack mackerel.
Sadly it's not on the web or I'd quote it, and I can't scan it because
my book appears to be in store still

"a gastronomical Hiroshima":
× After a dinner of jack mackerel you sit around and your subjects of
conversation are greatly limited. I have found it impossible to talk about
poetry, aesthetics or world peace after eating jack mackerel.×

"What did you say?" I farted
"I'm going to read Ecclesiastes" he farted
that's the one!

Optimal.
As long as you have diabetes, your risk of a heart attack or stroke is
statistically the same as someone who has already had a heart attack
or stroke so that your doctor is motivated to make your lipid profile
as optimal as possible.
Crestor is favored for raising HDL.
Antara is favored for lowering triglycerides (Trigs).
It is believed but not conclusively proven that optimizing the lipid
profile with these two medications will reduce your high risk of
future heart attacks or strokes.
Therefore, it remains much smarter to go for the cure of type-2
diabetes, by losing the black fat (VAT), which is achievable by simply
eating less, down to the right amount:
