minion - 08 Apr 2008 22:20 GMT http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/04/08/rich-not-poor-are-crowding-emergency-room s/?mod=WSJBlog This is the conventional wisdom: Priced out of health insurance, ever more Americans are crowding into emergency rooms because they cant afford a trip to the doctor.
Yes, ERs are getting busier. But its not because of poor people or the uninsured, according to this analysis in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Makes total sense.

What *would* have nade sense of this & was my first thought on reading the headline in the UK, was that the 80 bucks has to some out of the patient's own cash as an excess payment, but larger sums would be covered entirely by insurance, or the bills could be worked out to show that the patient had "paid" the required minimum.
That's the way I think a lot of the private health insurance schemes (Which run in parallel with the state system)work over here. Minor stuff is paid for by the patient, more major non urgent stuff is paid for fully by the insurance company, & really urgent stuff (as well as a lot of other stuff that the primary care sector hasn't the facilities to handle) goes to the emergency facility, which is the Government funded National Health Service.
Reading the rest of the article, I was obviously way off the mark. We tend not to hear about problems in your health system over here.

John Williamson - 09 Apr 2008 08:29 GMT > actually, I was being sarcastic. I noticed. But if I'm short of cash this week, getting the insurance company to pay out a larger sum, knowing they'll be getting it back off me in premium hikes over the next few years makes more sense than me paying out 80 or 90 (Monetary units of choice) now & not being able to pay the mortgage this month.
A lot of the middle class (Here, at any rate) are so heavily in debt for the house & the car & the school fees & so on, that they can't *afford* a sudden bill for a hundred or so. The fact that insurance tends to pay up now then collect the bill later helps planning, so it makes short term sense.

guys@consolidated.net - 09 Apr 2008 19:59 GMT >> actually, I was being sarcastic. >> [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] >up now then collect the bill later helps planning, so it makes short >term sense. I get in trouble every time I criticize doctors or our system of paying for medical care.
In my view, medical care is to serve me and I will pay a fair price for it. This payment can be handled in several ways.
As indicated by the present crisis in money. The only entity that can assure it's continuity is a collective agency ---the government. But we must realize the government generates no productivity. It collects our money and redistributes it.
WE do pay for all health care.
It is just how much and if the costs are so gross it breaks the piggy bank.
I see the medical profession that has grown into a monster about the same as government. So there is no easy answer.
But I be damned if I can accept what is going on. when I see so many have their life made miserable with gross medical bills they cannot pay.
It is a punishment for getting sick.
It is so common. We see so many that represent the "let them eat cake" crowd.
WE can do better.

Funny how they define "rich" as 4 times the poverty level. 2006 poverty level for a US family of 4 is $20,000. That would make a family with a household income of $80,000 "rich". I don't think so.
