Anybody know the recommended limits of Potassium in blood tests?
jacquie - 28 Mar 2008 02:39 GMT
If I remember correctly it is.....3.5 -5.0...... At the time I was
experiencing low potassium...sometimes as low as 2.3-2.4...I was always
asked if I was having any chest pains at that point......I was taking 6-7
K-Dur a day. They finally found an adrenal tumor and removed the gland....I
now have "Normal" levels :)

I think it is best to go to a search tool like MSN and enter
potassium levels. Then look at hits and read for a while.
I know I need more than a level, but the background information
I get so many different numbers from the many blood tests.

Thanks Jacquie,
My latest was 4.2 without a reference range given.
Potassium is important in heart health since it carries the electrical
charge in the heart beat.
Lisinopril can cause an increase in Potassiummy resulting in palpitations.
When I started on Lisinopril about six or seven years ago I had a raise
level of K and several blood tests but it lowered itself.
4.2 might be creeping up again so I will see about changing the Lisinopril
possibly - After checking my potassium levels since dx in 1992.

The range shown on my lab reports shows 3.5 to 5.0 mmol/L
Hope this helps.

3.5-5.0 is our reference range for adults. <=3.0 and >=. 6.5 are
considered "critical" results and must be repeated and phoned to the
ordering floor/ doc. Reference range slightly higher for infants, and
specimens which are hemolysed ( difficult veinupuncture resulting in
red cell destruction) will falsely elevate the results as the level of
K inside the red cell is much higher.

Strange, those are the two sites I find most useful but they *don't"
give the reference ranges for potassium
Everyone else has nailed it according to the other sources I also
found, 3.5 - 5
so you're "normal"
what does your calcium look like?

My lab sends a copy to their patients as well as their docs. Looking at my
last one it shows a reference range of 3.5 - 5.5 mmol/L. HTH.

I just had some blood work done. The reference range for potassium that is
shown on the lab report I received is 3,5-5.3 mmol/L. (Some readings have
different reference ranges in different laboratories. I don't know if that
is true of potassium, or not.)
