I bought the Abbott Freestyle Freedom BG Monitoring System at Walmart. Newly diagnosed T2. The test strips are expensive(50 @ $30), but there seem to be cheaper ones. Rite Aid also has its own meter with cheaper strips, as does Walgreens. As you're finding out, the cost is in the strips. As far as substituting strips, there are very few subs that will work in different meters. Good luck.
