Gee Thanks, Peter.  That is just depressing!  Maybe Dr. Delusion is
right.  Lets just starve ourselves with the knowledge that "none of
that evil food or drink can hurt us now!"  :o(

Just kidding, ....but not really.  The more I research, and test, the
more confused I become.  No wonder so many folks just give up.

Yep, and for every study, there is a counter study that debunks that
study, so best to just use moderation in most things IMO. According to
many studies, I'm truly amazed that I'm even alive, but then the next
study might say I'm not, I just think I am. ;-)

Few people know the true significance of his famous quote.

Rene's wife threw a dinner party. She had it planned so that the
guests would get a late snack before leaving. The guests usually liked
to depart around 2 AM, so she planned to give them the snacks around 1
AM. She had them all made up and set out on the kitchen table. She
admonished Rene, telling him to make sure that nobody ate any of the
snacks on the table until it was time to serve them.

As the evening wore on, Rene got into a discussion about existence
with one of his colleagues. They were sitting at the kitchen table,
quite engrossed in their talk, and Rene's wife walked in and started
rummaging around in a cupboard. Rene's colleague absently picked up
one of the snacks and popped it into his mouth.

Rene glanced at his wife, and noting that she had not seen this, and
not wanting to alert her, he quickly scrawled a note and passed it to
his colleague. His colleague said "Very perceptive, Rene.", and picked
up another snack.

The note said "I think they're for 1 AM"

Actual true story, a friend of mine and his wife were visiting another
friend, and had been smoking not inconsiderable quantities of fine
hash.

Around ten o'clock he looked at the *barometer* on the wall

"Good grief, woman, it's half past two, we must be off"

and dragged her out the door before everyone else could stop laughing

It's best to take each study with a grain of salt.  I never base my
decisions on an individual study, because tomorrow another study may
come along that refutes it.  I think about the schtick with coffee
that's been going on since the 80's:  first it was related to heart
disease; then it wasn't.  Next it reduced the chance of Alzheimer's,
but could cause anxiety.  And on and on.  The only thing that's been
consistent in coffee studies is that it increases the risk of
miscarriage in pregnant women.

Also you have to look at the whole picture.  For example, women who
imbibe alcohol over the recommended amount may increase their risk of
breast cancer, while lowering their risk of heart disease.  However,
the fact of the matter is that statistically, women are more likely to
get and die of heart disease than they are of breast cancer.   So I go
ahead and drink occasionally, enjoy it, and figure there's no cut &
dried answer for our health.

It's hard sometimes, but worth it in the end. Take all the research with
a pinch of salt, as others have said, there'll be some more along in a
bit that contradicts it. Do your own checks for your own circumstances.

I've not had chance to read that particular article, as I'm in France at
the moment, which is full of wine drinkers who seem to have no trouble
at all remembering things or finding their way. A lot of them seem to
survive to a fit old age, as well. ;-)

Yes mine is too, thanks to the kind folks here (I don't appear to be
sodium sensitive but I had an outbreak of foot calf and leg cramps
again recently which I hadn't had since I first started getting my BG
in line. God knows what set it off this time but I've been trying
Lo-Salt instead which seems to be helping. Or it may have gotten
better on its own, we'll never know.)

Actually the salt substitute may be worse for some folks, excess
potassium is contraindicated with some diuretics and other BP meds,
worth remarking on.

My BP is better than it has any right to be, judging by my doctor's
reaction every time he takes it.

Odd that lo-salt helps your cramps, mine are usually from being low on
sodium.
One day we'll get it all worked out.

Well I tried taking more salt and not a lot happened so I thought I;d

I also forgot, I'd increased my sodium consumption anyway by snorting
some sodium bicarbonate prior to lying down: for some reason
ranitidine is crap at controlling my acid reflux whereas famotidine
works well, and while I suspect the Alpha-Lipoic Acid was also partly
to blame, now I've returned to the famotidine I've been able to reduce
though not (yet) eliminate the bicarb. So I thought, if that's making
it worse let's try the opposite.

One place I lived I had a semi-tame mouse who was highly useful:
provided I kept the food locked away he would come out at night and
clean the crud off my cooker, all I needed to do was wipe up the
turds.

I used to get sever leg cramps a couple of times a night. I started taking
Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Selenium supplements. Since then I still get
leg cramps, maybe once a week, but not very severe. There's a prescription
medication for them, but when I checked on the side effects, I decided
against it.

My old man was prescribed Quinine but there are a lot more
contraindications these days.

We get hordes ofcalcium in the water and selenium in locally grown
food, and probably magnesium in my nuts and greens. I also tried zinc
for a month like the magnesium pills but nothing seemed to change, and
salt didn't seem to help so I went for the potassium as about the only
variable left.

Mine started up again recently after a long hiatus and now they've
gone away again so God knows what caused or cured them. Well my toe
did start to curl the other day while I had been gardening but I think
it was just objecting to the cold. Looks like we're getting a White

Hi Peter C,
1) It is much easier to see what you are talking about if you give the
proper reference :

Alcohol and Alcoholism 2008 Jan 31
Hippocampal Volume Loss in Patients with Alcoholism is Influenced by the
Consumed Type of Alcoholic Beverage.
AIMS: The individual extent of structural brain tissue changes in patients
with alcohol dependence is influenced by genetic factors, gender, age and
possibly a dose/duration-effect. Aim of the present study was to investigate
different types of alcoholic beverages with regard to hippocampal volume
loss in patients suffering from alcoholism. METHODS: We included 52 patients
with alcohol dependence and divided them according to their preferred type
of beverage consumption (beer, wine, and spirits). Hippocampal volumes were
determined using volumetric high-resolution MR imaging. RESULTS: There was a
significant difference in hippocampal volumes between patients consuming
different beverages (ANOVA: F = 7.454; df = 2; P = 0.0015) with the smallest
volumes in the wine group, followed by the spirits group. Furthermore,
patients with a preferred spirits consumption showed significantly higher
plasma homocysteine levels (ANOVA: F = 3.39; df = 2; P = 0.042). Linear
regression analyses revealed an association of homocysteine and hippocampal
volume only in the group of patients preferring spirits (R(2) = 0.364; P =
0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Homocysteine-mediated excitotoxicity may be an
important pathophysiological mechanism in ethanol-related brain damage,
particularly in patients consuming wine and spirits. The extent of brain
atrophy in beer consuming patients seems to be more moderate.

Pubmed ID : 18238850

2)The introduction says : Excessive alcohol consumption leads to structural
brain changes.... and :
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different types of
alcoholic beverages on hippocampal volume in patients suffering from alcohol
dependence. So this is about Excessive alcohol consumption even to the point
where a vitamin B deficiency occurs. Then beer drinkers have a slight
advantage : there is vit B in Beer.
All literature on the beneficial effects of wine recommend a moderate
consumption of 1 or 2 glasses/day

Your headline has nothing to do with the research

I think Peter is becoming obsessed with Alan, that is two digs he has had
now since Alan went away. Thanks for the proper study Gys. A glaring
omission in the media hype story was the word "excessive".

I'm just contemplating what I'm going to feed Alan - if I go with
confit de canard, what would you like on your salad instead?

Oh I can eat duck as long as you promise not to tell the ones that
live around here. More salad? Fish? We've currently got a pheasant in
the garden again, I'm putting a casserole out on the patio, get him
used to the idea . . .
