ALA and a 'scary' story

Following Trinkwasser recommendation I started taking ALA. It happened to be
that 2 days later I also needed to open a new set of strips. In the last few
days my numbers have been amazing : 93 in the morning vs 110 to 120, 1 hour
post meals coming in at 90ish after a large lentil portin....good numbers.

So good I questioned the new test strips. So I went out, bought a new meter
and another box of strips (they give you the monitor). The one I just bought
matches the ones I opened a few days ago, so my numbers are valid. I suspect
the ALA is making the difference. Big time. I have changed many things
recently and am not 100% sure what the big difference is, but I am hopeful
ALA is it.

Any further experiences would be appreciated. I will continue to monitor.

I asked the pharmacist about ALA...He knew little about it....Now for the
scary part. He started talking about how now and then he tests himself and
gets numbers in the 230 range...bla bla bla...He had no clue these numbers
were high. I told him he should try early morning when fasting and if he was
near 120 to look into it. He responded that he had and was well over 120. A

Simply shows that type-2 diabetes (T2DM) is an acquired problem when
even unsuspecting medical professionals such as pharmacists have it.

It remains smarter to eat less, down to the right amount to lose the
black fat (VAT) that is causing the T2DM:

Pinkeye posted the following and I read it immediately after your post.
Weird occurance or what!

Diabetes care is a poster child for much of what’s wrong with our
health-care system, which is good at handling acute crises but bad at
preventing them. Pharmacists are angling to step into the breach and
improve preventive care for diabetics.

Hmmm...  ALA has not done that for me.  This past week I even added the new
R Lipoeic Acid as well and I see no difference in my numbers.

Yes like cinnamon and other things it only seems to work for some
people, presumably depending which part of the insulin/glucose control
system is broken.

ALA is an insulin mimetic. It mimics the action of insulin but has one
wonderful benefit--no fat storage.

If you want to boost ALA's benefit, add evening primrose oil to it.

If you take Dr. Bernstein's recommended dosage for neuropathy pain, 600
mg ALA, plus 1000 mg EPO and repeat every 8 hours, and you inject
insulin, you'll likely need to reduce your insulin dosage by 30%
according to Bernstein.

I experienced this very thing--along with weight loss thrown into the
bargain.

I didn't believe in supplements until my recent experience with ALA, EPO
and now Benfotiamine. Google that last one. It has lots of clinically
established benefits for diabetics.

G'day G'day Uncle Enrico,

I hadn't thought of that last aspect. Sure it lowers blood
glucose.  It's not till one considers it being a insulin mimetic that
the fat storage aspect is something to be considered.

This IMHO is one of the great strengths of ASD.  We consider different
aspects of the diabetic adventure, rather like those seven
blind-folded wise men each contacting different parts of an elephant
for the first time and describing it to the others.  (Presumably works
with seven wise women though I've never heard the parable told that
way.)

Thanks for sharing your experiences as well as passing on Dr
Bernstein's recommendations with actual dosages.   Does he state
whether this is using the short acting ALA rather than a slow release
version?

Best wishes and thank you,

G'day G'day ItoTito,

Some lentils have a low GI so by themselves they'd lead to low post
meal figures. Lentils and beans are good sources of resistant starch
better than potatoes and grains.

Valid point.  There is only one of us and when we make MANY changes
such as increasing exercise, reducing bread or polished rice then any
or all of these could also be contributing to the lower readings. That
said one would expect alpha lipoic acid, ALA to reduce blood glucose
readings.  It is commonly stated on the net that in some countries eg
Germany it is prescribed for this purpose.

It does come as a surprise that people are surprisingly ignorant
outside their immediate field of interest.   Also some people haven't
updated. This might be the case with the pharmacist.  It may be a case
where it makes sense to go to a pharmacist where they work as a group.
I met a bloke recently who invited me in to join them for afternoon
tea.  He was going blind with age related macula degeneration.  He
assured me his blood glucose was tightly controlled so he didn't
bother to measure except one day every two weeks.  Then it was 9 (160)
to 13 (230) and his doctor was very pleased so told him not to bother
testing more.  While he was intelligent he found it hard to accept
that he needed lower figures to help keep the macula degeneration
under control.  Sadly, macula degeneration is a powerful indicator of
strokes and coronary heart disease.   Those with macula degeneration
are five to ten times more likely to have these conditions thanks to
them sharing similar risk factors.

Best wishes,

Hahahahaha yes I did exactly the same, was convinced I had a duff
batch of strips so tried a different drum. Then when I ran out of the
ALA I dropped it for a month to make sure the change was a real
effect. After a couple more on-off trials I am convinced.

Interesting that it's working for you when metformin didn't, I was
given to understand they had somewhat similar effects on the IR.

Indeed. When we moved we bought this house off a pharmacist, when I
was bemoaning how I felt, drinking masses of water and pissing like a
drain she suggested I might be diabetic and suggested I buy a meter.
By the time I got a new GP sorted out I had some numbers to show her
and had also started reading here. The rest is history.

Most of them here like the doctors and nurses appear to be pretty
competent and well informed, you got one of the other type. :( Maybe
you could educate *him* . . .

Great about the improved numbers!  Are you taking time-released ALA?

Hopefully, you've spurred the pharmacist to check into his condition.
Ahem.

Well the much improved numbers were not there this morning so we will see.
It is very strange, one week numbers in 93-100 range, next week numbers in
the  115-124 range. (fasting).

I am trying to note everything to try and establish a pattern. I tried ACV
tablets, huge improvement for 1 week (93ish). Then 1 week back to 115 range.
I tried ALA, huge improvement (93ish), then back to 115 range (today).
People have said they have good and bad weeks, mine seem to be too well
timed. There has to be 'something' that is triggering this. But my problem
is only in the mornings. Nights are consistently good.

I am not using the time release version. I take 200mg morning and night with
the primerose oil stuff.

There are so many variables. For example, we changed our clocks last
Saturday, so I am waking up 1 hour 'earlier'. Maybe that helped my numbers
and now my system is catching up...who knows...but I will find it...I am a
stubborn person.

I told the pharmacist he should check his fasting level and if it was near
120 seek medical advice. As well I pulled out a brochure he had there and
showed him the 1 hour, 2 hour post meal numbers quoted.

Thanks for the info.  I hope you figure out the difference in your

If you have DP, then it will show better numbers an hour earlier.

Forgot to add, watch out for lows, you may find your liver no longer
dumps as often or as effectively as it did.

I dug this up

but haven't read it yet

given time I'll dig up and repost some of the other articles from my
