Marvin The Paranoid Android - 29 Feb 2008 14:43 GMT
Good Morning,

This morning's BG number is 5.5 -- mid-range normal and our lowest
start to a day.

Insulin dosage is Novolin 30/70, morning dose 34 units, evening dose
16 units.

We called the clinic and spoke with the nurse and asked about reducing
my wife's carb consumption.  We're starting today with 3 carbs per
meal as opposed to the previous 4 carbs.

Her energy levels seem to be coming up (she's lasting longer thru the
day before needing a nap).

Her vision is still being blurred after her first meal.  It's only
decent when she wakes up in the morning after fasting thru the night.
When she eats it blurs within minutes.  She's eating only low to
medium GI foods ... breakfast is Red River Cereal, a small yogurt and
either a pear or apple (or today a small banana for a change).

That's about it.

Thanks and Cheers,
The Androids.

I should add --

This is day 12 since diagnosis with a BG reading of 26 (approx 500).

I know zip about insulin, but the progress is amazing!  Nice job.

Marvin, did they also have you reduce the insulin your wife is taking to
reflect the lower carbohydrate intake?

if she woke up at 5.5 this morning (that's perfect, btw), then she is
going to drop down further with the lower carb intake

good luck

I called the nurse today with that very question -- how do we adjust
for reduced carbs.

I'll out to pick up some glucose tablets today.  I realize we're now
learning things at the opposite end of the spectrum.

save yourself the glucose tabs

put 2 teaspoons of sugar into some water and have her drink that if she
goes low (this is what they did before glucose tabs were invented)

good luck with the new diet/insulin dose!

Or if in the U.S., buy Smarties candies.  Much cheaper and probably better
tasting.

Smarties in the US are like sweet tarts......... they are not the
chocolate coated in candy like they are everywhere else

SweetTarts... [DROOOOL] Mmmmmmm!

I had a two roll (40 candies ?) a day habit before being diagnosed as
Terminator2.

I keep a half-roll in my diabetiKit just in case.

It's strange thinking of my favorite candy as a Lifesaver. And those too,
but SweetTarts add that tang! Lifesavers will never measure up to
SweetTarts, imho. YMMV.

My SO likes me to carry jelly beans, so she can raid them.

Marvin you do know that they are a stop gap and that you need to follow
them/whatever up with a bit of real food soon after.

it's a bit more difficult reducing insulin per carbs consumed when
using a premixed insulin.  Follow the docs guidance and keep the
glucose tabs handy.

What are her blood glucose readings at one and two hours
after breakfast and also at the times she notices the
blurring?

That implies to me that she's got low enough bgs overnight to start to
clear her vision, then she's pumped full of carbs for breakfast and
loses it again. As for GI - it's not much of a guide for diabetics.
Some things work for some people but not for others... basically we
each have to work out our individual tolerances. But that's an
enormous carb load for breakfast, when her insulin resistance is going
to be highest. I couldn't eat a single one of those foods at that time
of day, let alone all three!

I'd tend to agree, my carb ratio between breakfast and the evening
meal doubles for the same BG rise, some folks are even more extreme.

Check the BG 1 and 2 hours after breakfast and make adjustments to the
carb level, looks like it's currently overloading the insulin then but
not later in the day.

Carefully though, take heed of the insulin users' advice.
