Procedural question about filtering

Peabody - 03 Jan 2008 18:30 GMT If I were to filter out all posts that were cross posted to any other group, would I miss anything? Are there cross-posters other than a certain one we all know and love and those who reply to him?

Quite a few posters I read crosspost to the 3 main diabetic groups - but none of them also crosspost to sci-anything, so that's what I filter on!

Unfortunately the filtering capability under the current crop of news readers leaves much to be desired. Forte may be ok, but the UI sucks so bad, I will not use it. Would really love to be able to say filter say on "if message id x-posted to X many groups, then delete". Will see if there are any 3rd party solutions and post back.

Well, I exaggerate. It was one of the original news readers, but has been maintained and updated from time to time. And it's free and non-bloat. It's WinVn, and includes filtering options on the number of x-posted groups, or any pattern match on group names, including wildcards. I still use it for all text stuff.

Well, seeing as I used to do Fidonet, and the like before Usenet, it's unlikely. Been doing the puter stuff since 81. Dang I'm getting old! Will give that program a look.

By the way, the ability to filter on things like Newsgroups depends on your server's ability to provide additional header information as part of the XOVER header downloads. Mine will do number of newsgroups, but not the pattern matching. I think that's because number of groups info is actually obtained from the XREF header.
Anyway, it's free, small, and doesn't mess up your registry. And, I forgot to say, Windows only. But, you know, it isn't a "modern" UI, as you sill see.

Outstanding, thanks again for the tip. As for the modern UI, even though I running Vista right now, I started on DOS and CP/M. Would invariably shell out in Linux, and just use the CLI for most of the stuff there. I used Vi a lot, that tell ya something? ;)
That is why I did that post on the hotkey stuff. I just find it so much easier for me to use the key strokes for a lot of stuff instead of wasting movement on the mouse. So for me, interface is not as important as usability, and doing what I need it to do to make me more productive.

Check out something called nfilter ( http://www.nfilter.org ). It sits between your newsreader and the outside world, and everything comes in through it.
This helps in one major way. There is no way, in most newsreaders, to filter based on specific newsgroup crossposts without going through a lot of hoops, but with nfilter, you can flag any post with a tag, placed in the subject line, and then let your actual newsreader filter it, based on that subject line tag.
