How to gain weight?

Nick Cramer - 10 Dec 2007 23:34 GMT I've lost five pounds in the last two weeks. Except for occasional stupidities, I've cut out rice, potatoes, corn and wheat products. What have you found to put some meat on the bones without spiking the BG? Thanks.

when I was first diagnosed I had to cut my carbs way down to 200 a day. So I guess I just ate what most doctors recommend for diabetics but also increased my activity levels.

Now I am overweight. I have lost some but not as much as I'd like. It seems my body just wants to stay at a certain weight.

This morning I was 163. I was down to 156 when Jun got back, a couple of months ago, from three months in Thailand. She got me back up to 168, but I'm losing it again. I've got 1/2 cup of pinhead (steel cut) oats simmering away. I'll put it in a bowl, break a raw egg in it, stir it up and eat it up. I've been noshing since noon, so BG wouldn't tell much.
Take care.

He went from a normal wieght pre-illness of about 143 down to 127 and the MD told him to eat mre! Those are words I have never heard applied to me:-)
He has been eating a modest bowl of ice cream (you could try no sugar added Edys or Dreiers in the West) every night alog with his regular snacks of pistacios and pumkin seeds. That and quite a few holiday parties between Thanksgiving and Channukah have got him back up to between 133 and 135 so he has to slow down the extra eating.
I might suggest severaal small snacks. If there re some carbs in them they are better if spread out over the day to avoid spiking.
I wish I had that problem:-)

I drank 4.2% butterfat milk before I was Dx'd with the beast.

You don't need the flavored stuff with artificial crap, just put it in a blender with some frozen strawberries and whole milk yogurt or other fruit you like with some nut oil for a shake.

Protein powder or extra > meats like steak, cheese. Thanks, Ozgirl. I've already alerted Jun to buy more steak for me. Are cashews and almonds as good as walnuts? Avocados will go on the list. She can get all that at Costco. Italian deli for olives and cheese (and canned tomatoes, sausages, pasta, proschiutto, pancheta and pepperoni). I love olive oil. I'll take a Tbs of it, sprinkle a very little salt on it and drink it down. My Granny started me on that before I can remember.

What > have you found to put some meat on the bones without spiking the BG? > Thanks. Hi Nick ... I have the same problem you do. I will tell you what I am doing but I won't pretend that it has done much good. I have really increased the fat in my diet. My drawer at work is stuffed with walnuts and pecans. They are loaded with fat calories ... I eat them from the time I start eating anything in the am (9 - 9:30) and continue through lunch.
I eat a big lunch that is not all that restrictive because I will start my workout about 45 minutes after lunch. I keep thinking this will help increase muscle mass but for me it just doesn't.
I continue to snack through the day in levels that don't spike my blood sugar.
Sometimes I consider that I should increase my meds (currently 500mg metformin per day) that will allow me to eat more ... but in the end my decision is that I'm 53 and would like to save the option of increasing meds for as long as possible.
Sometimes I think the answer is right in front of me, like last night ... I went to Dairy Queen and came back with 3 Blizzards (ice cream desert) and ate ONE bite. I don't think TWO would have killed me :-)
Not much in the way of answers, I'm afraid ... more just to let you know you are not alone in your unusual problem. I guess in the end I don't really mind being thin ... I weigh the same as you do.
best of luck
Paul

I found I really needed protein powder to get the muscle mass.
Paul L - 11 Dec 2007 22:11 GMT >>> I've lost five pounds in the last two weeks. Except for occasional >>> stupidities, I've cut out rice, potatoes, corn and wheat products. What [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > How much extra protein are you having? I found I really needed protein > powder to get the muscle mass. For about a year up until 3 or 4 weeks ago I would start my day with a low carb milk and a scoop of protein powder. I have quit to see what 100% fasting in the early morning might do for me ... so far I haven't seen much difference but I will give it a bit longer. I was hoping to skip this "breakfast" and maybe eat real food a bit earlier but so far it hasn't worked out.
Lost in all that is that I've really dropped my protein intake but haven't thought much about it until you asked. That's one of the insidious things about this disease. Sometimes it's easy to slip from what we know we should do ... regarding supplements ... just because results are mostly invisible relative to current health.
thanks
Paul

What [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > How much extra protein are you having? I found I really needed protein > powder to get the muscle mass. The protein powder I use is whey protein and it contains 23 grams per scoop. I try to keep saturated fat to a minimum and do not use milk in my cereal. I add extra virgin olive oil to my breakfast. I started EVOO in order to stop losing weight about 4 years ago. I had already lost 40 pounds and was down to near my weight at age 20. On the other hand, I also found if I went up to 4 tablespoons of EVOO that I would gain more weight.
There is a trade off between insulin resistance and weight. My body fat is usually between 17 and 18%. When it was last checked it was 16.7%. Lower body fat is helpful upto a certain point but then it can compromise the immune system. It is OK to be losing weight as long as muscle mass is not being lost. Rapid weight loss makes this balance hard to achieve.
Insulin Resistance, Inflammation, and Serum Fatty Acid Composition - http://care.diabetesjournals.org/cgi/content/full/26/5/1362
"Dietary FAs (fatty acids) (as inferred from plasma FA concentration) seem to be strongly linked to inflammatory activity. Interestingly, this association is especially remarkable in subjects with increased fat mass, defined as BMI >24.4 kg/m2 in men and >22.9 kg/m2 in women. Our population showed increased fat mass in comparison with other populations, so these cut points correspond to a BMI of 25 kg/m2 in the American Caucasian population (18). We found that the percentage of saturated FAs and {omega}-6 FAs were significantly associated with circulating IL-6, whereas the percentage of {omega}-3 FAs correlated negatively with C-reactive protein in overweight subjects. Saturated-to-{omega}-3 and saturated-to-{omega}-6 FA ratios were significantly and positively associated with C-reactive protein and IL-6, respectively. All of these associations hint at obesity as an inflammatory disease of dietary origin, ..."

Desaturation and Elongation of Fatty Acids and Insulin Action http://www.annalsnyas.org/cgi/content/full/967/1/183
"Insulin resistance is characterized by specific changes of the composition of fatty acids in the serum lipids and in the skeletal muscle membranes. Impaired insulin sensitivity is associated with high proportions of palmitic (16:0) acid and low levels of linoleic (18:2 n-6) acid in serum. ... Available knowledge seems to indicate that the degree of saturation of the body lipids, and especially the proportion of palmitic acid in the lipid membranes, may be critical for insulin sensitivity. The strong relationships between the {Delta}5 desaturase activity, a high content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the skeletal muscle, and insulin sensitivity may be due to parallel effects of diet and/or physical activity on the fatty acid composition and on insulin sensitivity."
Palmitic (16:0) acid can interfere with beta-cell function and insulin secretion.
