4 Tests in One Day

Which is a new record.  I figure screw it, I'm only given enough strips to
test three times a week, and today I tested four times in one day.  I
probably have less than a half-dozen strips left, but I should be getting
another 50 in the mail any day now, which is supposed to last me 90 days.

Breakfast today: nothing - one cup of coffee with maybe 2 carbs of creamer

Lunch at 12:00 Firehouse Subs Chef Salad (ham) with honey mustard dressing.
I have no idea what the carbs were.

First test at 3:04 PM: 97

Ate a small Fuji apple at 4:00 and tested again at 5:10 PM: 115 (not bad)

Tested again at 7:48 PM right before eating dinner: 87 (which ties my
all-time low two other times)

Dinner Zaxby's grilled chicken house salad with two packs (11 carbs each)
honey french dressing.  Also went ahead and at the two half-slices of toast
that came with it.  Finally, at one slice of low-carb butter (margarine)
bread that I had made for one of my sons who decided he didn't want to eat
it. (I hate wasting food).

Tested just a short while ago at 9:05 PM: 118

So now I know at least how I react to certain foods.  I don't know how
you're supposed to figure these things out when they tell you to test THREE
TIMES A WEEK.  My diabetes nurse had me on a schedule log to test once a day
at three specific times, and all three were before eating.  Naturally,
nearly every check was pretty low - 87 to 120 or so.  It was quite
misleading, making me think I was doing fine.  None of the scheduled times
were after meals.  Once I started testing after meals I was in for quite a
shock.  Now I definitely get the purpose for testing both before and after.
At least I now know that if I eat this same menu tomorrow, I could do so
probably without testing, because I have a pretty danged good idea what my
BG's will be.  I was really expecting all my socres today to be higher, and
I'm glad they weren't.  But, I'm still hungry, and I've been hungry all day,
and I really want to pig out right now.

The next time I see my primary care doctor, I intend to really sell her on
the idea of getting me a lot more strips, at least for 90 days, so that I
can start testing myself four or maybe even more times a day so that I can
really get a handle on this thing.  It's not like I'd need to test four
times a day way down the road.  I think it would benefit ANY newly diagnosed
Type II to be enouraged to test as often as they are willing to try, at
least initially.

If that doesn't work, I'll tell her I have compromising pictures of her with
a gigolo and threaten to show her husband.  Okay, I'm just kidding.  Just
checking to see if you're still reading.

Three times a week may give you some indication as to whether, or not, you
have diabetes. Isn't that nice?

While I appreciate the comment, I'm literally living paycheck to paycheck.
Even fifty cents per strip is way more than I can afford.  If I hadn't
stumbled onto getting VA benefits (thanks to my boss' suggestion) I wouldn't
even know I had diabetes right now.  I've been without health insurance for
over three years.

I may wind up having to buy some, but I may have to take a chance or two on
some ebay deals or something.  I'd have to get the price way down before I
could even consider it.  My family's gotta eat, even if I can't.

Hopefully, I can put on the Shrek puss-in-boots sad eyes for my Doc and
she'll give in and prescribe them for me.  I think she'll like my a1c number
in a few days (I think) I go back for more bloodwork.

Wal Mart is just as expensive on name brand strips as everyone else.
In fact I checked, they were
more expensive than a few places.

Forgive me if this appears repetitive, it's something I
wrote a while back and also posted to my blog for others in
your position:

Testing on a Budget
http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2007/04/teting-on-budget.html

I'm very lucky to be in a country where diabetics in the
past have successfully lobbied for specific support within
the government health system to assist good diabetes
control. I'm eternally grateful for the pioneers who created
Australian medicare and the NDSS
(http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/ndss/).

However, I'm daily reminded that others overseas are not so
fortunate. Consequently, some have difficulty following the
full "test, test, test"
as Jennifer suggests because of strip cost.

For them, I suggest a "one strip a day" method. This works
more slowly than following Jennifer's advice completely -
but it can still work. When I say "one strip a day" I'm not
counting the FBG or other tests the doctor wants - discuss
with the doc if you can cut back there. In hard economic
circumstances I can't see that doing FBG every second or
even third day is going to be a problem for the doc - but
check to be sure. Let's face it, the "average" type 2 out
there is testing FBG maybe once per week, doing absolutely
nothing with the result, and wondering why their A1c goes up
every 3-6 months.

This other daily test strip is purely to let YOU know what's
happening when you eat.

First, it will take a few extra BG tests for two or three
days to discover when your peak timing is
(http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/11/when-to-test-one-hour-or-two-hour.html).
Once you know that for each meal, you can focus on that
timing. Some reckon you also need to test before meals to
see what the rise was; in these circumstances I would see
the pre-meal test as a waste of a strip. Just concentrate on
the absolute peak level. Target one meal per week. Most of
us have problems with breakfast, so I'd recommend starting
there.

Test at the peak spike time, just for breakfast, until you
have modified your breakfast to the point where the spikes
are acceptable to you. I use Jennifer's guidelines, which
are similar to the AACE
(http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/12/hi-all-one-of-things-that-becomes.html),
but check with your doctor if in doubt. Concentrate on that
meal for one week, by that time you should have something
workable. I've given some alternative breakfast ideas here
http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/breakfasts.html,
but think outside the square and find what works for you.
There is no law that decrees cereal, juice, milk or toast
before noon. I just finished a kransky sausage with one
dry-fried egg before typing this (it's 7:40am here:-) That
will be followed with black, cinnamon-infused coffee.

Then concentrate on Lunch for week two, Dinner for week
three and so on. Then repeat over the next three weeks. Over
time you will find a range of foods that are OK - and a
range of foods that aren't - and slowly build a safe menu
base.

How insensitive. Be kind to your fellow diabetic people. You are a

You're not. Those tests are for the convenience of your nurse, and
will handily measure your decline. The only tests you can use for
getting control are pp ones.

Given your circumstances, I think I'd pick one meal a week and splurge
your 3 tests on one pre-meal and a 1 and 2-hour pp. It'll take you a
while to get your personal db built up, but you'll get there
eventually.

IMHO - it would be in everyone's best long term interests if the insurance
company would cover unlimited testing for the first ninety days. You can't
gain control until you figure out what's going on, and you can't figure
out what's going on with one or two tests per day - let alone per week. On
the basis of treatment I've received at the VA I've tentatively concluded
that their basic idea is to get everyone on insulin as soon as possible.
They they only have one regimen to deal with.
