Hello friends,

I have noticed that some damned fool is posting complet drivel and nonsense
that is completely bogus and attributing it to some of your regular
members?... I think we are being spammed by a kind of terrorist!

Here is an example of what was just attributed to Susan:

"
>Little by little Abdel will clean the statue, and if Abu eventually
>activates it too, the concern will form concerning the interesting
>expedition.  Tomorrow, Pilar never fines until Penny respects the
>religious driving how.  If you will surrender Imam's country
>over holders, it will outside can the order.  A lot of critical
>dining or reactor, and she'll back command everybody.  Will you
>predict out of the locality, if Garrick simultaneously views the
>initiative?  I am rapidly ancient, so I assess you.  The background
>as opposed to the accurate stage is the child that carrys irritably.
>What did Alexis act behind all the guides?  We can't flourish
>policys unless Norbert will roughly enhance afterwards."

Other nonsense is being posted and attributed to others.... I would suggest
that this sort of post is pure nonsense and is not legitimate. Another
strong clue is the multiple cross-posts to other newsgroups. I am not sure
of the best counter-measure to recommend right now, except to delete the
post....

Here is more hogwash attributed to a roddwyer@gmail.com

>"We rub them, then we correctly fund Ibraheem and Abdellah's low
>routine.  These days, Michael never recognizes until Mustafa
>boasts the organic iron hopefully.  As at present as Roxanne
>taxs, you can progress the traffic much more rigidly.  I am no matter how
>superior, so I value you.  Until Ayaz discloses the dependences
>backwards, Hakeem won't disagree any interior abbeys. "

Obviously a very sick individual is behind this garbage....

It looks like the hipcrime 'bot.  Stuff like this was
quite common for a while some time ago.  When it stopped,
I figured either the idiot behind it was in jail or
some NNTP gurus had figured out a way to suppress it.

It's autogenerated, and the forged senders are harvested
in the same manner as spam-fodder harvesting.

>> Obviously a very sick individual is behind this garbage....

It's being posted to *all* the newsgroups, but many services block
them -- Supernews is one.  Messages spamming supernews are being
posted, too, with follow-ups set to sci.crypt (and many posters are
replying to them, not even realizing (a) the perp isn't "supernews",
(b) the "guilty party" isn't reading the replies and (c) the replies
are going to sci.crypt -- bet they're wondering why their messages
never show up.

The person responsible doesn't rise to the level of a troll, i.e.,
isn't bothering to read all the replies expressing outrage and shock.
Best to just ignore them.

I'm not seeing them - are they crossposted to other groups?

My newsreader is set up so that any posts appearing on
sci.med, sci.med.cardioology or alt.activism.death-penalty
are automatically marked read before I start reading the
"good" groups.

That text is the same as auto-generated spam text.

I don't see anything that is crossposted to that group. I
suggest others set up their newsreaders to do the same if
they can.

I notice you use Agent. You may be using a different method
to me - I'd appreciate advice of your technique. Mine works
but is a little cumbersome.

Click Folders.

Click Properties.

Under Receiving messages, click Usenet crossposts.

Check the first three boxes. Enter a "2" in the number of groups
crossposted. Choose "Skip the header" in the drop-down box.

I hope that makes sense!

I'm afraid it made sense until "Under Receiving messages,
click Usenet crossposts." In Agent 3.3/32.846 the rest of
the menu is different, so I'll continue to use my cumbersome
method.

Oops. I have version 4.2. You need to upgrade!

But this worked, via different menus, in version 3 as I recall. You might
search the help index for "crossposts."

Turning off downloading of all crossposts has worked so well that I've
implemented it as the default for all folders. It gets rid of nearly all of
the exchanges between the religious and antireligious folks, plus a lot of
the spam.

Thanks Jim.

There are some crossposts I find valuable, such as those
linking asd, asd.uk and mhd.

My method is to subscribe to the offending groups, but to
set them up so that all messages in those groups are marked
read on receipt. I set up the groups I want to read, such as
asd, so that any messages marked read in another group are
also marked read in the wanted group. Then I download twice.
The first time messages appear in every group; the second
time all the messages crossposted to unwanted groups are
marked read and only the ones I wish to read are left.

I completely concur..... I really enjoy the asd.uk group, even though I am
rather sporadic about posting there.

There is a noticeably different ambiance there.... also something of a
uniquely UK cultural perspective.

I can't do that, but I'm not seeing any either. I do, however, mostly
manually mark as read any topics which become crossposted to more than
a very few newsgroups. That suggests that whatever-it-is is responding
to multiply cross-posted threads in order to get here, otherwise I'd
see some of it.
